AirTran Airways Complaint - Baggage Scam
I recently flew AirTran with my family from KC to Atlanta. We chose AirTran because the tickets appeared to be the Lowest price of all the airlines. Don't let these seemingly cheap prices fool you--the airline makes up the difference in prices by scamming you on the cost of luggage!!
We knew that the airline charged a fee for checked baggage--$15.00 per bag for bags under 50 lbs and less than 62 inches (l+h+w). Like many others who have posted reviews, we had no problem with the luggage on the outgoing flight from KC to Atlanta--the ticketing agent listed each of our bags as meeting the requirements for the $15 price and we were correctly charged $15 per bag.
However, much to our surprise, on the return flight from Atlanta to KC, we were told that one of our bags was "oversized"--62.75 inches (3/4 of an inch over the limit). The ticketing agent was incredibly rude, and what was a $15 charge for the outgoing flight became a $54 charge on the return--for the SAME BAG! The agent said that it wasn't his problem that AirTran judged the bag as fitting the accepted dimensions on the previous flight. When we asked him to remeasure and let us watch his measurements, he refused. Its clear from this website that this is not an isolated incident and in fact seems to happen frequently with AirTran--they know there is nothing you can do when returning home from a trip and that you will have to pay their ridiculous fee to get your bags home.
Based on this experience and the poor customer service across the board, I will never fly AirTran again, and would recommend others take their buisness to another airline.
