Brinks Home Security Monitoring - Complaint
Review by Sam98 on 2009-06-24
DALLAS, TEXAS -- I have been a Brinks customer for many, many years and 3 different homes. I have paid thousands over the years. I always felt better knowing that someone was watching over my home and family while I was away. I have trained my wife and 2 young kids to use the alarm system properly so if/when a break in occurred, someone would call the cops. (like in the commercials)

Well, a few months ago, it was early in the moning and I had just arrived at work. My wife was supposed to be home alone. I received a call from the Brinks monitoring center and a man named Trey told me that the alarm had been triggered. I asked him if he had tried to call the house. He did with no answer. The first thing that went through my mind was the Brinks commercial where the bad guy breaks in when a young woman is home alone and they save the day. Not so in real life. I told the Brinks guy, Trey to call the police immediatley. He agreed and I hung up to try my wife on her cell phone. ...no answer! In a panic, I tried the house phone again...NO ANSWER! I ran to my car and began to rush home with the worst possible thoughts running through my head. Then the Brinks guy, Trey called me back on my cell. He said he had not called the police and would not because my paperwork for my new house was not complete!!! Actually I had lived there almost 2 years. I yelled asking if he was joking? He said there was nothing he could do until I filled out some form and mailed/faxed it back to him! I told him that he was crazy and to call the police NOW. He refused again. I yelled some more in a panic (not sure what I said, but it was probably not nice), and he, in a very calm voice, said no again...not without the form. As you can imagine, this was a highly stressfull event for me. After yelling and trying to convince Trey to do the right thing with no luck, I told him to cancel my account emediately and that Brinks would never get another dime from me or anyone I could talk to abou them.

Luckily it was a false alarm...the wind had blown open a door that was not closed properly and my wife had gone to the store without her cell. BUT, my God, this is what I have been paying these people for so many years for??? To do nothing...That is certainly not they way they represent themselves. If it had not been the wind, they would have had a much bigger problem than me cancelling my account and writing this. The fact is, they even kept billing me for 5 months after I told them to cancel.

REDICULOUS! Don't waste your money on these DO NOTHING when it counts Bozos.

Are you serious? Yeah, so the guy didn't call the police, probably for some dumb legal reason, but you sat on the phone and argued with him instead of calling the police yourself??? Really????
And I'm sorry-this is a pet peeve and I know I'm being petty but I can't help it-the word is "ridiculous"-no "e".

This story had me so intrigued that the thought of Sam calling the police never crossed my mind.
Great point, Skelly.

Glad it was a false alarm, Sam.

Sam should have called the police himself, but, this was a 'panic' situation. He wasn't thinking clearly (no one knows how they are going to react to an emergency until it happens) and the Brinks 'phone drone' should have called the police.

In the event of an emergency I always call 911.

Mrs. V, I would agree with you except he had time to sit on the phone and try to cancel his contract with them. He has the presence of mind to get angry and take action there, but not to call the police? He can ask repeatedly for this guy to call them, but it never crosses his mind to call them himself? And I have to assume there is some legal reason the Brinks idiot didn't call the police. Like I said, it was probably a dumb legal reason, but nonetheless, that's what happened. Good thing it was a false alarm.

I would expect Brinks to call 911...wonder why they didn't call to complete the paperwork sometime in the years the OP's been under contract...incomplete contract should equal no payments nor services due.

Good point about the contract/payments.
Still, Sam could have picked a better time to stand his ground than during a potential emergency.

true skelly...

You wouldn't believe the things people do when they panic. As an EMT, I've seen a lot of normally calm and together people do the oddest (and stupidest) things.

The one I remember the most is a the scene of a rather large fire, the husband was running in and out of the bldg screaming about his prize fish being boiled alive. He was taking them out of the tank in little paper cups. The Capt had to just about knock him out to stop him from going back into the bldg again.

I can totally beleave that the OP was driving down the road to get to his home while yelling at Brinks to call the police.

Great story, Mrs. V! I guess I should cut Sam a little more slack, especially compared to the guy with the fish in cups.

Awwww, Mrs. V, I got some great EMT stories, too :)

So, correct your paperwork.....OR DIE!!! Hmmmmm....I'd bet Brink's canned that genius shortly after he did what he did to you.

These alarm co's are good to notify you something is wrong, not to prevent it. Even if the alarm co called the cops, by the time they got there, if it had been real, even calling 911, they would be investigating a crime, not preventing it. People ask me why I carry a gun? 1. I can 2. A cop's too heavy. Large trained dog helps also.

Even so..a security firm that takes your money for years but can't provide a simple call to the police in the event of an emergency is no kind of security firm.

If they had incomplete paperwork, only Brinks would know that, and its up to them to get it up to snuff.

Cashing the customer's check for years appeared to be the only thing they were concerned about until push came to shove, then they crumbled. Shame on them.
