AAA Complaint - Left My Wife Stranded
SADDLE BROOK, NEW JERSEY -- 5/19/2004
To whom it may concern:
On May 18th at about 5:00 p.m. my wife placed a call to AAA for roadside service. She explained that her car was disabled and that she needed assistance. The person on the other end of the line asked her for her code number and then for the membership number. My name came up. She was then asked if I was in the car with her. She responded no, he isnít. The AAA person told my wife that I was the only one authorized to use the card and since I wasnít there and my wifeís name wasnít on the card, they would not come to pick her up. They offered the number of a towing service or to call the police. Finally, after trying to convince the person on the other end of the phone how desperate and in need she was, my wife accepted the number of the towing service affiliated with AAA. My wife then hung up the phone. If the person from AAA offered my wife the opportunity become a member and add her name to my card, it had to have happened after the line was disconnected.
I have been an AAA member in good standing since 1992. By now it has been explained to me at least five times, that my wife needed her name to appear on my card in order for her to have received any service. I understand that these are the rules but I think the situation could have been handled much better. If the AAA person had requested a credit card number from my wife, she would have been happy to provide one in order for them to add her name to my card. Considering the cost of adding her name to the card and my record for renewing my membership on time without ever missing a payment, I think that itís a safe bet that it would have been worth the gamble for AAA to trust her. Instead, she was left stranded on the roadside for hours waiting for the AAA affiliated towing service to arrive. After taking into consideration the fact that the brakes locked up suddenly rendering the vehicle immobilized in traffic on the road, I think its safe to say that my wife was nervous, scared and likely to have been upset while talking to the person from AAA on the phone. I think that AAA should pay the cost of the towing bill, which was $75.00. I will pay the additional $26.00 to add her to my card so this can never happen again. Please contact me if this is agreeable. I think this is the only fair way to resolve this issue.
