Popeye's Chicken Informative - So They Were Missing A Few Items

Review by knowitall2 on 2009-07-20
SINGAPORE -- Although I rarely eat at fast food places, my hubby was dying for some Popeye's, so off we went for our first Singapore Popeye's experience.

The location was great--right on the water. The restaurant was also a step up from regular fast food places as it was surrounded by windows so you could enjoy the view. It was also very clean--which is no surprise here!

Now for the dining experience. We ordered two 3-piece dinners, which include a biscuit, drink and two sides, plus the chicken, of course. Now for the funny part--well, it was to me anyway. They were out of biscuits and also out of all the sides except for the cajun fries and corn. No potatoes, no cole slaw, nothing. So, they gave us chicken and 2 orders of fries each.

We had to laugh at our lack of choices. But, hey, it wasn't their fault--they ran out of product. The chicken was actually delicious--very crispy, spicy and hot (just cooked). The fries were also great. I had to go on a 20 mile hike afterwards, but, hey, what the heck I really don't think I could have eaten biscuits or anything else!

Before I left, I just had to ask when they would have all the sides and biscuits again. They said to check back in August, LOL. They were always smiling too. How do you get upset at that? You don't!

Last time I was in Singapore one of the menu items at one of the US-based fast food chicken chains was bite sized fried chicken bits covered in melted cheese and mayo. Talk about heart attack in a box.

Yep, Ben, they have all the good starches/grease you could ever want! I did sort of feel like I should visit a cardiologist after the meal, lol.

I'm giving you a VH because you didn't whine about lack of slaw and enjoyed the scenery and the chicken.

(VH) K2, did you try any of the native cuisine?
Posted by Starlord on 2009-07-20:
In Singapore, if you eat at Popeye's, count your cats when you return home.
Posted by C2O on 2009-07-20:
Wouldn't it be wiser to count them before you leave home, Starlord? If one's missing, stay in.

Kia, I knew you would be one of the only ones that could enjoy an experience that others would go ballistic over.
LOL @ check back in August! I guess you are sitting at the edge of the world there. I knew it was flat!

Cat's? Starlord, it's pretty modern over here, LOL. In many ways, much more than in the states. The food establishments have to be very clean or they are shut down by the health department permanently. Speaking of cats, there is a huge pack of them that I walk by every day. They are behind a row of restaurants (in an alley), come to think of it. But, the people are constantly feeding them and putting out treats--what does that mean?!!!

zz, we do eat the native cuisine--it's very cheap and good. The Chili Crab is the best! I do most of my cooking at home though, even here. I'll be here another year and a half at least. Plenty of time to sample all the cuisines. There is quite a melting pot of foods.

Great review! Its impossible to grumble at people who smile and want to please...at least for me it is. So nice when people are friendly, it can make all the difference in a meal out.

I've always heard that Singapore was clean, clean and modern. So far, its living up to my expectations.

I'm smiling, and want to please.

I think I can get you a job, C2O! It may not be fast food though.

Thanks, Boki.

Thanks kia! Fast food wasn't what I had in mind.

Mmm, chili crab and Tiger beer. I could spend a day eating at the hawker stands, too. Only thing I don't like is the smell of durians.

The Durian, beat andrew.
Posted by knowitall2 on 2009-07-21:
Ben, the durians do stink. I walked through a market the other day and almost lost my lunch. They must have gotten a boat load in and they were cutting them up! They aren't allowed on public transportation for obvious reasons. I can't imagine even eating it! They even have it in ice cream.
Posted by Ben There on 2009-07-21:
I tried it in ice cream... Gross as it sounds. They also had beans in the desert. I will stick to the curries and noodles.
Posted by BokiBean on 2009-07-21:
I've had red beanpaste-based desserts before. Not bad, probably a bit of an acquired taste.
Posted by knowitall2 on 2009-07-23:
Ben, as much as I like ice cream, I'm never trying it, lol. Boki, I haven't tried those (that I know of).

VH! your post made me smile.

Thanks, diabolical. Sometimes you just have to make the most of things!
