AT&T Complaint - Deceptive Sales Tactics
I manage a locally owned franchise.
Recently, two women wearing business clothes with professional looking AT&T name tags came into the store requesting to speak with the owner or manager. My co-worker replied that although I was available, I do not oversee any of the business's contracts. They insisted on seeing me still, so I came up front.
They claimed that they were investigating reports of overcharged accounts, and that they needed our business phone number to pull up our record and correct the issue. I gave it to them (stupid, I know), but repeated that I have no authority to to make decisions regarding any account so they would have to go through the owner, who was not in. They stated that they were from out of town so they had permission to make the 'corrections' through any manager or supervisor, and then requested the phone numbers of the owner's other stores (I didn't give them out).
One lady started dialing her cell phone, explaining that they would walk me through the process. I repeated once again that I was not in a position to handle any contract issues, and stepped back to call the owner.
Turns out the owner had recently canceled with AT&T, and this was the second store they had tried to pull this scam on. I relayed this information to the representatives and informed them that we were not interested in their services.
They STILL insisted that we were on 'the list', and that if they could get me on their cell phone, they could straighten the whole issue out. I had already wasted enough time with them, so I just ignored them and went back to work.
Today, I found out that they visited a third store telling the same story.
I understand that these people were probably not directly employed by AT&T, but I am still astounded that the company affiliates themselves with a business that would use such deceptive tactics. They were blatantly trying to coerce unauthorized employees to sign the business up for their service.
I have tried emailing AT&T through their site but never even got a confirmation that my comment was received. I strongly prefer a response in writing, so I have not attempted to contact them via phone.
