Ranting About Tires Complaint - Bad Engineering - Automotive Tires

Review by 46738 on 2009-07-27
I'm not one to complain - rarely do but I do find this a bit of a pain.

There are a zillion sizes of tires today! Perhaps I'm old school but I remember when there were about 6 sizes and about as many aspect ratios.

My wife's car had a nail in the tire - I'm not one to have repaired tires (safety paranoid) so I requested the dealer install a new tire. Both have to be new on the same axle and I was fine with that. Oddly, they are different sizes on front and back. It seems no one stocks these tires (5 days del). The service manager pointed out something I thought was interesting - they stock few tires as every tire on every model this manufacture makes is different. It was pointed out to me that even domestics are doing this, with multiple sizes on some models.
I get the sole source or near such to keep margins high but needing a tire away from home gets very complicated.

I live on an island an hr from the closest dealer which isn't convenient but a lot better than being on a road trip stuck for a week in podunk America waiting for the UPS guy to deliver a tire to Bob's garage.

I agree, and to add, getting a satisfactory rating regarding a tire to purchase is also getting very difficult. With all the different brands, I still have a very hard time choosing a tire, as Tirerack, Discount Tire, etc. all have ratings that contradict each other.

I hate tires, car shopping and insurance.
