Papa John's Pizza Informative - Employee v. Manager

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND -- When I applied for a job at Papa Johns pizza it was for a full time summer job and a part time job during the school semester. After working 2 months with the company I informed my manager that I was unable to work certain days during the week due to after school sports and college classes, giving him a months notice. Shortly a few days after of informing my boss via note of cutting my hours for a period of time, I was let go. Its not the point that I was "let go" because I wasn't able to fill their needs as a full time employee, what rubbed me the wrong way was that after working on a Monday night with my MANAGER and ASSISTANT MANAGER, there was no notice before starting my shift.

At the end of my shift my assistant manager informed me that it was unreasonable to cut my hours for school. Not only do I think it is completely unprofessional to be abruptly let go, but I also think that while working with my manager during the night he could have given me a heads up or discussed my scheduling. As a student my grades come first and I persoanlly am not bothered by the "let go", but just as employees give a 2weeks notice about leaving I feel working establishments should also do the same.

My opinion of Papa Johns as a working place has completely changed and as a former employee being quite disgusted with the way I was "let go" I will never purchase products from the company again. Any company who feels that extra time off for a higher education is unreasonable not only loses my respect as a work place, but loses my respect as a customer.

You have your priorities right. Your grades and school come first, and I don't think you'll have a large problem finding a "papa john's substitute" that will be more amenable (sp?) to your hours.

I hate to say it but that's kind of the way it is with firings and layoffs. Even big corporations lay off with no notice whatsoever, usually on a Friday, and completely by surprise.

Its a shame your manager couldn't just talk to you like a human being, but that's kind of the way it is, a lot of the time.

My friend was laid off this way recently. Only one week before the owner was saying they couldn't run the store without him. Then one day at the end of shift the owner came in and said he was letting him go. Nice, Huh?

The managers were jealous because they know you'll be happier and wealthier than them in just a few years. They'll still be flipping pies (‘till 2am) while you're a corporate bigwig. You made the right choice. Good luck.

Papa Johns didn't handle it well, but on the other hand, you went to them and asked for the job, and told them what hours you could work and in fact, did work. Then you changed the conditions of your employment by limiting the hours you would work. Frankly, I would have cut you loose also. It's unskilled labor, and an easy job to fill with someone who can work the hours they need.

There are plenty of these type jobs out there, find one that fits your schedule, and be up front about your hours and your priorities.

I think food service companies think it is best to get rid of an departing employees ASAP. I am not saying that you are this way, but employees that only have a little time left with a company tend to get sloppy and don't care as much about the job. They don't want another fart pizza video hitting youtube...
