While I understand your disappointment in not getting the job, is it just possible that you are assuming the age discrimination issue? Folks who are hiring out there say they get 300 or so resumes for every job. It's a rough market to get hired in, and it's really possible that there was someone with a closer skills match. Good luck on the job search!

Like goduke said, it's rough out there and the best thing to do is to NOT take it personally and just keep looking.

Good luck, Frank! Never quit, never surrender.

My husband told me yesterday that they had 2, yes 2 available positions at the mines. Over 350 people showed up to apply for those positions. I can only assume that your age has nothing to do with not getting the position, but they probably had an overwhelming amount of applicants and decided to select the most qualified for the position. It sucks that you didn't get the job, but you know what, it happens. I'm sure there are other jobs out there you just have to keep looking! Don't give up!

Maybe in your interviews you came across as a little bit snarky. You did here. A positive attitude is your best presentation.

Maybe it was the phoning 10 days in a row for an interview. Kind of hard to see the line between being "confident and aggressive" and being an annoyance sometimes.

another point to keep in mind
how many applicants do they have, and how many positions are they trying to fill?

Posted by madconsumer on 2009-08-10:
unless you signed a form to allow a background check, one was never done.

you were sent a form letter, same as which many companies use. perhpas they simply did not feel you were qualified.

if you suspect a real labor violation, contact your local labor board.

I was thinking what you were thinking, Ken.

I don't believe age means as much now as it once did. I'm in my early 50's working with 20-30 yr old firefighters and have seen no age discrimination. However, I did all the same training, completed all the same physical requirements and go on shift with a happy, positive attitude. No one ever calls me the "old lady"; I'm just one of the gang that's working as hard or harder.

Take a good look at how you're coming across in your interviews and remember, a positive attitude goes a long way in this job market!

Stop yelling and you'll have a better shot at the next one.

I was in HR for years. And (alert!! generalization ahead!!) if an applicant kept calling every single day for 10 days, I would consider that a warning sign. There's a difference between confident -- even aggressive -- and obnoxious. You probably crossed that line.
Posted by PepperElf on 2009-08-10:
yeah but that's a sensible generalization
=)

In our current economy, there are many, many more applicants for each position than there are positions. Let's face it, age is a big consideration, and companioes are just not going to hire one of us old geezers. They will turn themselves inside out and upside down to avoid saying you are too old. I have heard "we feel you would not be willing to work for what we can pay you," or some other code phrase for, "Sorry, you are just too old."
