Discover Card Complaint - Irresponsible and Deceitful
I have been had a Discover Card for over 9 years. In this 9 year time period I had always made my payments on time.
My first issue with Discover happened this May when I was notified by letter that my interest rates would increase from 13% to 17%. I called customer service and they basically were defensive about it citing they had to be "competitive" and my response was "yeah you have to be competitive after all you are borrowing money from the FED at a 0% rate and you jack up my rate by 17%" That is exactly what is happening here.
Nevertheless against my better judgment I figured I would simply pay it off every month due to the cash back rewards. Since I was planning to use this card's benefits when paying wedding-planning expenses. The logic behind it was if I was going to have to shell out a lot of money anyway I might as well take advantage of the opportunity to get cash back.
Enter an unexpected expense and a trip cross country. For the first time ever I had to schedule an online payment from my new bank. I had scheduled my payment 6 days in advance of the due date and provided a routing number provided in my checkbook.
Discover listed my payment as paid for 4 days, but I noticed the day past the payment date no funds where withdrawn from my checking account.
So I called them up. The representative I talked to on the 9th of August assured me it was just my bank that was late in posting the funds and everything was fine.
The very next day they posted that my bank had not paid. They charged me a $35 returned payment fee. They charged me a $19 late payment fee AND jacked up my rate to almost 25%.
I called my bank and asked them why the payment did not go through. My bank said that they had different electronic routing numbers, but that Discover Card should have already had the electronic routing number associated with my checking account in their system.
So basically Discover uses any excuse to nickle and dime their customers.
Needless to say after this fiasco, I am closing the account for good. There are plenty of other credit cards out there the will not pull this kind of stuff. I caution anyone applying for this card to look elsewhere.
