TomTom Complaint - Bad TomTom - TomTom XL

CONCORD, MASSACHUSETTS -- Received a refurbished unit as a gift which would not hold a GPS signal, returned it and bought a new better model TomTom. When I went online to register my new unit, it wiped out my unit. After many, many, many hours on the phone to TomTom support kids, my unit still would not work. They kept telling me how to fix it and each time it didn't work. Finally, I WAS TOLD THAT ONE CAN'T REGISTER TWO UNITS USING THE SAME EMAIL ADDRESS, that's what killed my new unit. So, you have to have a separate email address for each TomTom you own! The software is flawed! The tech support have no clue! I sent back the unit at MY expense. When they finally returned the unit, it was a different unit (hopefully not a refurbished one) with NO car charger, NO computer connection, or booklets...nothing! Now, I have to wait another two weeks. I've always had Garmins and have never had any problems. I'm sorry I ever bought this unit. DON'T EVER BUY A TOMTOM!

Get a map. Been around for centuries and work great. Never need new software and can get you where you need to go. Damn hard to fold back up though.

The TomTom is surely more convenient than a map if it would work properly, and it was received as a gift.
The process definitely is not user friendly. I think asking for decent customer service and a user friendly process is not unreasonable. This post will be useful to anyone who wants to purchase one or more of the TomTom GPS units.

My post was said with tongue-in-cheek. Obviously, GPS units can be more helpful than maps. If they work properly.

I tried the tom tom, returned it and got a Garmin Nuvi. Love it never had any problems.
Tongue in maybe, but it can remember spending hours with a map & marker in my hotel room lining up my calls.

We bought a TomTom at WalMart, and it ran us right at $200, and when we tried to update the maps, it wiped the unit clean. We took it back and got a refund, no questions asked, BTW. We then bought a Garmin 205W, and we love it. I don't understand why we didn't get one long ago. Great review.

I have a TomTom One 3rd Edition and love it. My sister bought a Garmin 205W and hates it. She used it for a trip to Ohio. The device instructed her to make turns that sent her hours in the the wrong direction. Thankfully she knows how to read a road map. When she entered the address of the hotel the device could not find it. It even showed her home to be miles from the actual location.

My Tom Tom stopped synching with my laptop and Tom Tom customer support had no clue how to fix it, other than to say that they did not repair out of warranty devices. I find it hard to swallow that I have to spend hundreds of $$ to get a Garmin. Tom Tom has to know that this is going to cost them a lot of customers.
