Ryder Truck Rental Complaint - Charged For Fuel After I filled it up

Review by Kaybowser on 2009-08-18
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN -- I ordered a panel van from them once I got there they told me they didn't have one. So they offered me a 26 foot truck for free. Way too big for the stuff I was moving. So I took it having no choice. The move went fine and I took it back. About 5 miles away from the rental store I filled both tanks till it came to the top of the tanks. There was no way they could have put anymore in the tanks.
I got my bill and they charged me for 12 gallons of gas. I know I filled it until it was almost spilling out. I called them and they gave me the line. How much gas did you put in I put in 15 gallons to go 174 miles. They state they added 12 and my 15 = 27 gallons. That makes it 6.5 mpg. They then said they would take 3 gallons off. Lucky me after I filled it FULL they would give me a deal...Right.

I honestly think that Ryder and U-Haul do this often. I rented a similar truck for 10 miles to and from and they said I used a QUARTER of a tank. I explained to them the improbability of such a task and they backed off. You can always dispute the charge but that entails a bit more than its worth or better yet, you can make a claim using the BBB. Please keep us informed of whatever you decide.
