The Milford Plaza Hotel, NYC 8th Avenue Complaint - The Mildew Plaza aka: The Milford Plaza, NYC 8th Avenue
NEW YORK, NY -- I recently travelled with my best friend to the Big Apple, the great New York City, to see the Broadway musical CHICAGO.
Now as the native New Yorker that I am, I always grew up knowing of the Milford Plaza and on a couple of occasion, in the past have been a guest there, so I figured, "Hey, since this will technically be my best friends first broadway muscial, why not say at the "Lullaby of Broadway-The Milford Plaza."
Boy, was that ever a BIG MISTAKE.
I had made online reservations, and was quoted 425.00 for the weekend stay, upon checking in the front desk clerk, I showed my reservation to the front desk clerk which clearly notated the agreed price for the stay, I presented my debit card and the debit card was processed, but without any notice, I was charged 100.00 extra, as security. Now granted, the website does not state anything about a security deposit and neither did my receipt which clearly stated how much I was to pay upon check in. When I entered our room, a voice in the back of my head told me to check the bank and my debits, and VOILA! I came to realize an additional 100.00 was debited. I called the front desk and asked to speak to the front desk clerk, to only be told that this is their policy and there is nothing they can do about that. I explained nothing on the website, nor the receipt revealed the "hidden fee", I explained it was not an issue of the fee since it was not that much, 50.00 per person, it was an issue of an undisclosed fee. They refused to work with me.
Now at this point my best friend asked me what was going on, so of course I told her, this did not sit well with her either, so she literally went down to the front desk, politely requested to speak to the Manager, she showed him our paperwork and made him go online to prove the fee is not disclosed. Much to his dismay she prove the Milford wrong and the monies had to be reversed right there and then.
NOW WAIT.....This gets better.
We are back in the room now, room 2205, unpacking and organizing our clothes into the closet when one of us have to go to the bathroom. What we saw almost made us faint.
The vents were literally covered by dust and spiderwebs. I kid you not, it must have gone without cleaning for years, plus the vent was not working.
When we pulled the shower curtains, we found the walls literally covered with black mildew.
By my friends bed, on the wall there was a large, I mean LAARGE bloctch of dirt on the wall, and by her bed a pill, seems the previous guest medication, which concerned her because should she have brought her 2 year old along for the trip, who was to say the baby would not have found this and put it in his mouth.
There were streaks on the bedroom mirrors, as though a good cleaning was in order.
So, what did we do? We took pictures, went back down to the front desk, showed them the pictures, they notated down our findings, they asked us not to go to lunch yet, mind you we were starving, they changed our room to room 642 and advised us that we were to go down to the lounge for a complimentary meal when we finished.
So we transferred rooms, turned on the AC which was off and away we went to lunch.
This is only gets better folks, hang on......
We get to the Milford Lounge to find that they were straight out of food. At this point I am starving and exasperated. My frined speaks to the lounge Manager, who again, apologized for the misinformation and gave us the correct hours of operation for their lounge, however he was nice enough to ask us to come back tomorrow and he will personally make sure we are taken care of. So here we are starving, in search of food, but first, being the ladies we are we decide to go change our shoes first, we enter the our new room to find the room as hot as hell.
So here we go again, we call the front desk and asked for someone to come and check the AC. The "engineer" comes up, looks at the unit, says their is nothing wrong, that it will take time to cool down and leaves. So we look at eachother and decide to go to "dinner" at this point, since lunch is no longer and hopefully the room will be cool when we get back in.
We went to eat at FAMOUS DAVES in Time Square. The meal was worth all the aggravation. Absolutely fantastic food.
We get back to the hotel, to find our room hot, humid and muggy. The hall was cooler than the room. We call the front desk, explain the situation and they try to blow us off.
My best friend goes back downstairs and speaks to the front desk explains that this is totally unacceptable, she manages to get them to change our room, again, and she also wants the hotel to render a peace offering, in the form of maybe a fruit basket, munchies, something. She is told that the hotel is not in the custom of doing this. She advised the clerk that her friend is a writer and she is sure her friend will have a field day writing an article about the Hotel and will have them for lunch. The clerks reply was, let her write her article. My friend of course does not back down to anyone, so again she speaks to the Manager. She explains everything in detail to him, he is quite apologetic and shocked at the reply the front desk clerk gave her.
Needless to say.....we got some Godiva Chocolates and a couple of bottles of water, plus complimentary breakfasts for the duration of our stay...hopefully this time they will not run out of food.
So now we are in room 1205, and guess what the room was cool, the television working, the beds looked comfy, but the quilts were stained, so we tossed them aside. We enter the bathroom again, again a wall full of mildew, worse than the first room and it has a ceiling full of mildew too.
We got tired of the run around given, spent the night in the room, since it had a working AC.
In the morning I wanted to check out early and head out back home, but my girlfriend insisted she wanted her complimentary breakfast. So hesitantly, I accompanied her to the Milford lounge, to find a Continental breakfast. However, remember that Manager who promised to take care of us personally in the morning? Well he did. Everyone else feasted on the cold Continental Breakfast, but we on the other hand, was provided a hot meal of our choice.
So, thank you Mr. Manager. I would mention his name but he did not want to get in trouble, since in reality he was not suppose to do that, but he did because he was shocked at the treatment and lack of service and professionalism we received at the Milford.
So, as of today, August 23rd, 2009, we christened THE MILFORD PLAZA with a new name. Fellow readers, let us introduce you to the new "MILDEW PLAZA", located in New York City, 8th Avenue.
ENTER AT YOUR RISK, DO NOT FORGET TO BRING YOUR ASTHMA PUMP, GAS MASK, SCRUBBING BUBBLES, PILLOWS, QUILTS AND STERILIZED SUITS AND GLOVES.
The hotel is disgusting, and the service horrendous.
Makes me wonder, "I paid how much for WHAT????"
By the way, yes I did file an Attorney General, Better Bureau and Department of Health complaint against them.
Til next time.
