Northwest Airlines Complaint - Missing items - microphone and personal items

microphone and personal items - Complaint
Review by theftvictim on 2009-08-26
I was on flight NW35 departing Amsterdam and arriving Los Angeles on Aug. 18, 2009 with a layover/customs stop in Detroit Metro Airport (DTW). It took me a couple of days to unpack from my long trip, only to find my AKG mini clip-on microphone and my Gillette Mach 3 Razor missing. Total value at $150 USD. I didn't report it since I know Northwest Airlines has a terrible reputation when it comes to missing items and luggage, and it isn't worth my time going back to LAX to fill out forms and talk to customer service. Just wanted to make sure people know about these little thefts that are just small enough that they get away with it every time. Lesson learned: Keep all small valuables in your carry-on. If you have a good razor, keep the handle in your carry-on, leave the blades in your check-in baggage. Keep a count of your clothing. If you have the patience and energy, check your baggage when you arrive at your destination. I don't know if Northwest is to blame or US customs. Either way, don't trust anyone that handles your baggage. It's a seedy little operation they have going on.

I bet it was TSA in Detroit - they have million dollar equipment that can detect expensive little electronics packed in the middle of a bag. Baggage handlers don't have any fancy equipment, so they would have just seconds to guess which bag out of the hundreds in front has something expensive in it. Maybe they got lucky in your case (pardon the pun). That said, your bag passed hands through Dutch security, KLM baggage handlers in Amsterdam, NWA baggage handlers in Detroit or LA, US Customs and TSA.

Unfortunate situation.
Other than anecdotal there is no evidence to support your assertion that Delta (Northwest) has a "terrible reputation when it comes to missing items and luggage."
DTW Terminal A like ORD has a multi level automated baggage handling system. The only people down there are USCBP... who treat it as a hangout. Since its inbound from Europe visual and a dog are used but a whole lot of them have time in an isolated place - draw your own conclusions.
As Ben said it also could also have been the TSA
