Nextel Complaint - Early Termination Fee - Early Termination

Complaint
Review by Leslieopmd on 2004-07-12
BERLIN, MARYLAND -- I am so hot with Nextel right now I could just die...which by the way I was informed would be one of the 2 ways of not paying the early termination fee!!!! My husband and I purchased a new home and Nextel does not service the area we are moving too. I was told by the rep that since they didn't provide service to that area that I would not be charged an early termination fee....NOT...I called today to cut the service off as we are moving in 2 days and was told that I owe them $200.00. I told them what the rep told me and they say he said...I may or may not be charged a fee. This is not true. They also told me that will only waive the early termination if I am fighting in Iraq or dead!!! I am so furious with them right now. I will not pay this fee. I have already contacted the BBB and am contacting the Attorney Generals Office. How can they charge someone for a service they can't provide....well according to them "not our problem your moving" I will never never use this company again...and my husband is also shutting off 180 Nextel phones for his company that don't have a contract.....and they said they didn't care...kinda crazy huh....he is porting the #'s too. You do the math $200.00 early termination fee verses shutting off 180 business phones. Not to smart on their end. Oh well...has anyone else run into this problem

Most cell phone companies will tell you the line, "we may or may not waive the fee," yada yada yada. Anyway, most of the companies find that it's a good faith measure to waive the fee when a customer moves into an area that they don't service. I know that Verizon and Sprint have done that for friends. Check with your local Nextel store, maybe a manager there can push that through for you. I hope you can get this resolved so that you have one less thing to worry about during your move!

Just another complainer upset that she has to pay what she signed up to pay in her contract. Well, that's too bad that you're in this situation, but the truth is, most companies charge the early termination fee. If you don't pay it, watch it go onto your credit report and it IS perfectly legal. Next time, read what you're signing.

If you are moving and cancel the service and are charged an early termination fee. Call customer service ( not collections ) and point out your new address does not have the service, it will be waived. If the Agent will not do it, politely ask for a Supervisor, who will. It will be waived. Be persistent yes, but remember the person on the other end of the line will go out of their way to help you if speak to them, you like to be spoken to during your daily contact with your customers. A loud mouth is tolerated and might get it in the end but I promise you will be the cooler topic of the day. Just like where you work.
