Stallings Financial of Marietta , Ga . Informative - Fee for Payment Confirmation

Review by Squabs on 2009-09-21
MARIETTA, GEORGIA -- I just paid a medical bill that I wasn't aware that I owed from 2003 until I pulled my own credit report recently . I phoned Stallings Financial to pay the balance in full . I receieved no rude treatment, but when I requested a confirmation number, I was told it would be an additional 5.00 fee . It's a new, and sad day in America when companies are allowed to profit from things as customary as proof of payment !

I'm calling my Congressman immediately . I know, it's only 5.00 but this is obsurd .

You didn't really need to pay the debt. It was already beyond the statute of limitations on debt in Georgia. That you did pay a 'stale' debt is commendable. As to confirmation, your credit card statement should suffice.

Thank you for the kind words and the advice . It obviously was never my intention not to pay my doctor . The odd thing is , their bookkeeping dept. never sent me any sort of "Account Past Due" notice . I've been to the same doctor numerous times in the six years since this occurance ... not a word from anyone on his office staff concerning the issue . Had I not checked my own credit recently , I would have had no knowledge of this matter . I'm planning to build a new home in early 2010 , I'm glad this surfaced before I applied for a mortgage . Then again , this will probably still throw a wrench in my gears when that time comes .

I'm surprised you weren't harrassed by them. Usually, bill collectors are very nazi like about that when it comes to collecting their money.

I've never dealt with a debt collection agency before , but I've heard all of the horror stories . This just leads me to wonder if I even owed the amount to begin with . I've got health insurance , but my doctor's office told me the case was so old , they no longer showed it on their books . In other words , no one could tell me why I owed them money . My original beef was not so much paying the bill , it was the audacity of Stallings Financial hitting me up for an additional 5 bucks for a conformation number to prove that I had in fact paid them . This is a predatory practice in my book .

If you paid by credit or debit card or check you already had proof.
