Bob Evan's Restaurants Complaint - Health Issue - Flue

Flue - Complaint
Review by junaman2 on 2009-09-26
OSAGE BEACH, MISSOURI -- I was at the Bob Evens on Hy 54 on Thursday 24 Sept 2009. When I walked in the greeter was busy checking people out so a waitres seated me. After a short while the greeter came but my table to say hello, I asked her how she was doing and she told me she was really very SICK and she coulden't shake the flue.

I asked her to please move away from my table before she infected me. I told my waitres she should have stayed home instead of coming to work and infecting every one who comes thru the door and her fellow employees, my watress told me that staying home when you are sick was frowned on buy the manager.

I don't understand why the manager didn't send her home so she coulden't infect all the customers she came in contact with and also her fellow employees.

I think the board of health should look in to situations like this.

Thank You.

I can understand you being upset. But think about, all the people you come into contact, that are ill. It's a chance we take everytime we leave our homes.

She probably couldn't afford to stay home.

A nurse once told me many times we infect folks LONG before we have symptoms. Not excusing the person, however, Skye is right. The simple act of breathing puts us at risk.

Keep washing your hands, and don't touch your eyes or your mouth until you do.

I agree with the OP. The employee who was sick should have stayed home. This is going to be a huge issue with companies everywhere if the H1N1 hits like it's supposed to. So many employees won't stay home when they're sick for such a wide variety of reasons. Most of my career has involved dealing with employee relations issues. I can see this being one of the biggest ever, right next to the next firestorm - health insurance.

Unfortunately, many companies have attendance policies which are nothing short of insane. And since I believe that Missouri is an at-will state, she was probably afraid for her job. It doesn't excuse something like that, but it could explain it.

I feel for you OP. However, with employers trying to cut down on hours and costs, the first thing to go is the employee. Some of us can't afford to take off when we get the flu, however much we want to.

Do you honestly THINK we WANT to stand there all day feeling yucked out? We need our jobs honey, just like you do. At Walmart, if you are out more than 6 days in 6 months, you get put on probation if you are lucky. Fired if you are not. How many days do you suppose it takes to shake the flu home in bed with meds and fluids?

Ever think about all the people you come in contact with that you never speak to? How sick do you think they might be and you never knew?

I do. The person walking down the street who you come within a few feet of could be infected with latent tuberculosis and neither of you would know it. That's terrifying to think about.

A flue is a chimney

Now think about this. You are in the restaurant and order your food. Watch the wait staff clear off the tables. Watch them pick up the glasses, plates, eating utensils and coffee cups filled with bacteria, viruses, sputum, and e-coli. Now watch them pick up your order as they nicely arrange the food with their filthy hands and serve your drinks with their filthy hands all over your glasses and cups. OK now lets look at the fast food places. Watch your food being prepared. No gloves, and no hot water in the restroom. Then watch the cashier handling filthy money go back and prepare your order.
Makes you all wonder why you are all feeling crappy most of the time.

If I were the seater I wouldn't have even mentioned it, how silly on her part. If you come to work sick you don't go around telling customers that, you suck it up and make the best of it and keep contamination at a minimum. Where I work you only get sick pay if you have a doctors note, if not you just get to take a day off with no pay. Maybe she has lots of bills and can't afford a day off. Who's to say.
