Reader's Direct Complaint - Middle School Magazine Fundraiser
BOCA RATON, FLORIDA -- I have participated in many fundraisers, both actively and by spending money, when my daughter's were in school. But I have never seen anything like this.
My eldest daughter is 20. Last winter she purchased 2 magazine subscriptions for $35 each (6 magazines each, paid with a check) to help her middle school cousin with their fundraiser. The original agreement was that UNLESS she opted to renew, the services would end after the first 12 months of service.
Within the first couple months, she started getting the renewal cards and letters to extend her service. She read them, then tossed them. The subscriptions are due to expire in December this year.
Today a letter came for her from a collection agency called RPS Worldwide demanding $450. They claim they are collecting for Reader's Direct. She called to talk to them, but had to leave a message.
I am researching this company and will be informing the school board and BOE about this company. They can't really do much as she never signed a contract nor did she give them her social security number. But it annoys me that this company can seriously act this way.
