TEXAS -- Why is the government letting Cable One get away with a monopoly in cable service in many areas of the country?
I'm from Grayson Co. Texas, and it is a true monopoly here. We HAD small cable companies here once, with good service. Cable One comes in, beats the competition to the point of leaving, and then jacks the price up dramatically.
Service is a joke, for the most part. You have to constantly check your bill for errors, and watch your internet connections for capping. I had 5mb connection for over a year, paying for 10mb.
Satelite doesn't have all the local channels in this part of the country, so we are forced into cable. And DSL around here feels like you're surfing with a 14.4k modem.

The government (FCC) doesn't allow companies to become monopolies. They do the exact opposite. The open markets to competition among any company that wants to service an area. If during this competition smaller companies lose out, it's not the fault of the FCC.

It is common to have just one cable company (the largest one usually takes over the smaller ones) in one area.

You must understand how this comes about. Two or three companies may offer a service. A very large company may come in and set up shop using an obscure name. Sell their service at a loss. They can do this because they have they BIG corporate money behind them. The other companies cannot match those prices. They fold up or are bought by the big guys. Now the new company can use the name of the parent company. Hike the prices to where they want. It's dirty pool but that is how it works.
