Dunkin Donuts At Union Turnpike Complaint - Age Discrimination

Review by charo on 2009-10-03

I was very mad so I do not wish to continue working here. There is POOR MANAGEMENT.

One more thing that bother me, 2 girls there constantly eating and one of them laughs at me all the time. One time I asked for a sandwich after my 5 hours shift and one of them said you have to pay 10 percent if you take out and 50 percent if you eat it here. I can't believe that just because they are constantly eating bagels and sandwiches while they are working.

Is the company policy that they charge you for the food? 10% or 50% seems reasonable to me. Maybe the other employees are stealing it.

What job were you hired to do?

Why are you 40 years old working at Dunkin Donuts? Any job that's low on the totem pole, like food service, tends to have more young people APPLY, and there for more young people work there. You make minimum wage at those jobs, and that tends to attract younger people. Aren't tips just for cashiers and the food makers? You said yourself all you do is clean, there's no sharing of tips for that position. Of course you're going to be the odd man out, you're twice their age! Cliques are very juvenile, and retail establishments with young employees tend to have cliques. It's just part of the job. I'd suggest sucking it up and not being the "frumpy old guy" they all talk about behind your back, or go find something else. If you absolutely must work there, then go above the store manager and talk to HR.

A job is a job.

The newest person on the job in a fast food place is usually the clean up guy/gal. Get another job.

1. If Dunkin was guilty of Age Discrimination they wouldn't have hired you.
2. The lowest person on the totem pole usually gets the scut work. Once you move up they'll provide more training.
3. The tips are for the people behind the counter serving people. So you're not entitled to any of the cash.
4. How do you know they are laughing at you. Based on your review you sound more than a little paranoid.
5. A lot of places will feed you for free while your on property. They aren't going to give you a bag of food for you to take home.
6. Quiting after working there 2 weeks? Shows zero commitment and will make it that much tougher to get a new job.
I would have thought that by your age you would have developed a thicker skin than this.

Good points, Eloise, especially #1. If age discrimination were their thing, they wouldn't hire an "older" person, and if they happened to have any, they'd fire them.

If the OP doesn't even know the policy for eating their food or how tips are shared, it certainly looks like someone needs to do some kind of training. I wonder if the OP was given a type of manual at the start? Why would they hire someone just to essentially screw with them like this?

The kind manager who hired was transfer to another dunking donuts I never saw him again. This manager at Union Turnpike is quiet and the shift leader looks like she is always in a bad mood and the employee is always laughing at people. The reason I apply for the job is because it was a block from my house. I never in my life worked so hard than in this place. I think there is a limit for everything an I tolerated enough. I definitely feel I can find a job in any other place for minimum wage with kinder people. I appreciate your comments.
