MacAfee Virus Protection Automatic Renewal Complaint - MacAfee Anti Virus Auto Renewal

Review by Bag of Donuts on 2009-10-31
I was a subscriber to the MacAfee program but changed my anti virus software prior to the expiration of my subscription. Upon expiration, I received multiple emails from MacAfee indicating that the credit card on file had expired and in order to renew the account I must contact them to update my account information. I did not do so and assumed that my failure to update was an indication of my unwilingness to renew. A few months later I received a notice from MacAfee that my account was renewed using the information on file. The only way that could happen is be altering the expiration date submitted for the charge. This charge was not only unauthorized, but illegal. I have emailed MacAfee and I do believe that they will credit the account, but this activity is serious enough for me to contact the Federal Consumer Frauds division to log a complaint.

I am very upset about this and all should be aware that you should not use auto renewals with any company. You should always have an option and if you don't, go some other place with your business.

Yes it does sound fraudulent. They probably used your credit card number and kept trying new expiration dates until the charge went through. I'd definitely report this.

Wow, I hated MacAfee anyway but this just cements it. Don't waste your money on that. Trend Micro or AVG work just as good.

That sounds fishy. Are you sure that was McAfee and not a phishing scam?
