HSBC Retail card services (Furniture Row) Complaint - Didnt take full payment - Credit card

Credit card - Complaint
Review by bdjingr on 2009-12-03
I had purchased a living room furniture set from a Furniture Row retailer. The purchase was put a newly opened card from Furniture Row and managed be HSBC Retail services Dept. The purchase was under a "same as cash" promotion on 12/27/08. I made payments up to 10/24/09. On 10/24/09 I made one final payment of 1,840.66 and wrote paid in full on the memo line on the check. To my surprise, I received a bill the following month for. 66 cents. I thought that I had mad a mistake when writing the check so I check with my bank to view the payed check online. For some unknown reason, that check was the ONLY check that I could not view. From here I went to the checkbook to see the carbon copy. Sure enough, the check was written for 1,840.66. Was this an honest error on their part or is it that my promotion period was just about to expire and not having my account paid in full would mean that they would be able to demand the deferred finance charges of $436.76 You can come to you own conclusion, I'm sure you know what mine was. I am sending them another. 66 cents (This is more than it cost them to bill me) to try and avoid what would come next.

Have you spoken to anyone or received another bill? I would have been proactive and called them as soon as I got the statement for 66 cents and tried to find out what was going on.

What does your bank statement say for that check?

Deoending on your handwriting, two sixes can easily be read as two zeroes. The person encoding the checks doesn't know or care anything about your payoff, if just an error, and they do happen.

I got a bill once for less than the price of a stamp (back before online payments were an option). I called and they dropped the charge. Hopefully this will end for you.

One more thought, presumably you aren't getting paper checks back. You may want to call your bank and tell them you need the paper back for that check in case this does turn into a dispute. You'll want to be able to prove that you wrote the check for the correct amount.

I have seen this with our own company (we use HSBC)-they may have read it wrong. Most importantly, how much was the check taken out for? The amount written on check or the amount minus 66 cents?

In this case, definitely check with HSBC and your bank to verify the amount. Mistakes can happen, and this may simply be a coincidence.

I agree with all the other comments. I wouldn't wait to mail them a check for 66 cents. I'd hop onto it immediately by phone before the promotional period runs out. (I'm making an assumption here that the period was 12 months.)

66 cents?

heck for that i'd just drive down the road and hand them a dollar since there's an hsbc within 5 miles of me.

that is a bit silly. i wonder if you can pay it online...
