McCabe's Automotive Specialists Complaint - McCabe's Automotive Specialists are actually McCabe's Rip Off Specialists!

Review by Chewie on 2009-12-17
UNIVERSITY PLACE, WASHINGTON -- My 2002 GMC Denali broke down. I called AAA and they suggested towing it to McCabes Automotive Specialists (my worst nightmare) They put a new basic battery in and installed a rebuilt AC Delco 130 amp alternator. When I went to pay, I noticed they charged $577.00 just for the alternator, not including installation or anything! When I questioned the service manager, he said, "Hey, we mark up the price on parts, that's how we stay in business!" I was shocked. My family researched and found that you can buy the same exact replacement locally or online for $170-234.98 with a warranty. You can buy a racing, chrome plated 160 amp alternator for under $500! We contacted them to get at least $300 refunded and they offered 10% off the total bill of $839.40. Unacceptable. They should not be in business! I hope others see this and don't fall victim to this fraudulent business.
Company Response on 01/14/2010:
When they brought in the 2002 GMC we diagnosed the vehicle and then called them with an estimate for repair. The customer questioned the price of the alternator and we explained to him that we use AC Delco on GM products because it is original equipment, we explained that you can buy cheaper alternators but that is exactly what you get--cheaper quality. He ok'd the repair work to be done. We charged the customer the manufactures list price. You cannot but an AC Delco alternator on line or from any local parts store, it has to be an AC Delco supplier, which there is only one in town! If they had a problem with the price then they should of never authorized the repair. To ask for something after the fact is not ethical. We have been in business for over 37 years, have been the AAA Top Shop Award winner for three years in a row. To ask for $300.00 after the fact would result in giving them the alternator for less than we paid for it.....now who is trying to rip who off!!
