Sony Complaint - CPU Fan - Poor Customer Service
SYRACUSE, NEW YORK -- I am a computer tech for a small company in Syracuse. I was asked by a customer to take a look at a Sony Vaio notebook for a friend of his. Being that I have been in the computer field for some 20 years and do this kind of thing for a living. No problem. So I thought anyway. At first look the hard drive was bad. No problem, we sell 2.5" hard drives, these are standard for most notebooks. But after replacing the HD the system would just spontainously turn off. I popped the cover again and found you could fry an egg on the left side of the computer. 9 more screws to get the CPU fan out. It of course was bad. No problem. Just replace it. Ok, so here's the problem. You can call Sony and after getting directed to 3 diffrent numbers and 5 diffrent people you finally get the parts dept. To find out that a little piece of crap fan, that ANY tech will tell you will eventually fail, probably before anything else in a good computer costs $70! Well, more accuritely $62.91 + $6.05 shipping and can take up to 2 weeks!
Ok. Now here's another funny part. They want the old one back! it's an additional $50 core charge if you don't return the piece of tin. Turns out even though the fan is the only thing that can go bad, Sony forces you to buy the metal enclosure it's mounted to.
Sony has no pitty on anyone for the fact that they are charging so much either.
But, if you do manage to take it apart that far, an additional 3 screws and you can see that the fan is a GC054006VH-8 and find it on the web no thanks to our friends at sony. and save about $30 or so. I advised Sony that I would recommend to any of my clients to NEVER buy a Sony product again.
