Gold's Gym International, Inc Complaint - Fraudulent Charge Practices
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA -- I just received a call by a collection company claiming that my wife owed $250 to Gold's Gym for not having cancelled her account but blocked the our checking account from allowing further charges made to it by Gold's Gym. He claimed that this could be filed as a bounced check in the State of Florida. This is for charges from 2002! It's August of 2004 now!
Well, as it turns out, my wife filled out a "Request of Cancellation" form with Gold's Gym after not wanting to go anymore since she had become pregnant at the time. After she noticed that they continued to charge our checking account she went ahead and blocked that at our bank.
We didn't hear from them since until this phone call (although the collection agency claims that they have return mail receipts!)
Well, as it turns out, the "Request of Cancellation" form isn't enough to cancel your account! You ALSO have to get a confirmation form signed by the gym's manager! I don't think this is made clear at all and the client is left intentionally in the dark about this.
As far as I'm concerned this is a fraudulent and misleading practice at the very least. This is either bad accounting (which should lead to bankrupcy) or it is simply malicious. I believe this to be the latter.
