Retail sales of small animals in a mass merchandise store? - Complaint
Review by Seattle Brookstone Shopper on 2009-12-22
BELLEVUE, WASHINGTON -- Brookstone selling little frogs in little tiny boxes for Christmas?!? Doomed to die! Appalling!

I was ABSOLUTELY appalled that Brookstone had shelves full of little frogs it was selling when I wandered into the store Dec 19th in the Seattle, WA area. Little frogs in a little tiny little clear cage - almost certainly doomed to live a horrible life and die a horrible death.

Brookstone has lost my respect as an innovative retailer .. ultimately losing me as a future customer.

What the heck were they thinking?

Where were you when kids got baby chicks for Easter? Having them getting devoured by the neighborhood dog or cat was much worse and unless you are a frog then how do you know how horrific their deaths will be if at all? (NH)

I have to say, that's just very weird. I can't imagine who would actually buy that.

I do agree, thought, that it is a bit cruel to the little critter. I also don't like to see the beta fish in the little bowl sitting on a shelf in a store.

or the fish in a bag you win at the state faires too

mine was a lil unhealthy thing
and he died within a week or two

the pet store replacement was really strong (swear he's trying to turn into a koi!)

OK...it's not quite as bad as it was made out to be. It's called Frog-O-Sphere, and supposedly is a self-contained ecosystem.

Unfortunately, they won't ship right now due to the cold weather. You can only find it in retail.

The fish I won at the fair lasted 2 years actually. Says on the website that they won't outgrow that little tank, which is a plus, but that doesn't mean they are happy or healthy in that little tank. It's the same thing with beta fish. People buy those tiny cramped decorative bowls for them, and the fish has no where to swim! Putting them in a gold fish bowl affords them plenty more space if you can't go any bigger. Although a beta (or frog) could live in such conditions, it's like saying a human is happy in a 300sqft apartment. Sure it works, but it's not ideal at all.

Found a peta complaint and video of the treatment of the frogs. There was bound to be some sort of peta outcry...

we always ate the chicks we got for Easter once the quit laying eggs and sometimes before that.

lol I don't even know how to approach this one.
Posted by zzrokk on 2009-12-22:
JKT, the chicks that we got were tiny and were nowhere near maturity.
Were those old bird's meat tough to eat?

Obviously the OP has never been fishing. Oh the sadistic things that kids would do to those poor minnows and nightcrawlers. Those minnows would be doomed before you would be done fishing!!!

People Eating Tasty Animals!

are the frogs good eatin'?
or are they just appetizer-sized?

What is more hygienically challenging: Handling a couple of frogs or being the 4,356 person to use a Brookstone back massager in one of its stores?

Posted by jktshff1 on 2009-12-22:
zz they grow up to be big ones and not if you cook it right
pepper....just the legs, battered and fried.
Posted by PepperElf on 2009-12-22:
class - depends on where you're using the massager

walmart sells fish, so are they included?

how can the poster be sure the frogs will die? many people care for their animals with more care than many people do children.

Ok so first off when you say they are "doomed to live a horrible life and die a horrible death", i have sold over more than a hundred in my store with out one dieing one us, and my staff and i are trained to take care of them, when they are on the shelf or our back room We feed them and change the water if needed. You are free to speech you voice but i have had all of my customers very happy, and if you don't like the fogs its same way as having fish in a small fish bowl.
