Gabriel Brothers Complaint - Don't bother coming in near closing time
I'm not usually one to nitpick things, since I work in retail myself and you all know that, but a recent trip to Gabes (Gabriel Brothers) kind of angered me and my husband, and I want the community opinion. Here's the set up:
It's 9:44 and we arrive at Gabes, fully aware they close at 10. Being a retail associate my husband knows I will refuse to enter any store with less then 10 minutes to go to closing time. I too, hate last minute shoppers. With a full 15 minutes, I felt a little better about it. He wanted to go in and see if they had any new Carhartt clothes.
As we walk up to the door we are told in passing by a Gabes employee collecting carts "We close in 10 minutes". Ok, fair enough, we're aware but thanks for the update. Right in the doorway is the manager, closing the automatic door. "We close in 10 minutes", she says, even after clearly seeing us being told this by the girl in the parking lot not far from the door. "Ok" we say, and round the corner into the store. "We close in 10 minutes" says the girl at the customer service desk.
...::blank:: we just walk on by. At this point it was really unnecessary to inform 2 guests walking in in the span of under 1 minute, and I'm not exaggerating that it was literally under 60 seconds, that you close in 10 minutes 3 times, when in reality both our phones say 15 minutes. It was clear to us they did not want us in the store, even though the store still had a few other customers inside shopping. My husband went over, checked the Carhartt rack, found nothing new, and we left. Back in the car the time is 9:49. NOW you have 10 minutes to closing!
I mean, I can totally understand where they are coming from, but I have never been in a store where they tell the customers that. At my store we never approach customers to inform the closing time until AFTER the store has closed. There is a 5 minute and closing announcement made over the intercom. The entire thing sort of rubbed me the wrong way. I'm not going to stop shopping there or anything, I just wanted to know if anyone else would have felt similar.
