VOKLSWAGEN RUSSELL AUTOMOTIVE - BALTIMORE, MD Complaint - POOR RELIABILITY, POOR SERVICE - VOLKSWAGEN

Review by steveg on 2004-09-07
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND -- I purchased a Passat Wagon from this dealership in 5/2000. After only driving 17,000 miles, the 'secondary air pump' needed to be replaced.

Last week, now with 47,000 miles, the same 'secondary air pump' failed again, and needed to be replaced, at the exorbitant cost of $818.00.

VW, as well as this dealership, were unwilling to pay for any portion of this cost, even though it seems quite likely that there was some defect in this part.

Today, I called my local mechanic, because the car battery needs to be replaced. I learned that only a VW dealer could replace the battery (!!!), because removing the battery would cause a number of computer systems to be interrupted. Has anyone ever heard of a car that needed to be brought back to the dealer TO REPLACE A BATTERY?.

I'M WAITING TO SEE HOW MUCH THIS WILL COST!

Although this car drives well, it is extremely expensive to maintain, and the reliability has been POOR!

Your mechanic is somewhat correct, if you disconnect the battery you may lose the code for the radio. You can avoid this by running a jumper wire from the battery post. If your searching for a good German mechanic in your area check out John Neteler Auto Sales and Service in Finksburg (410) 833-8844, (you can tell you are talking to John by the thick German accent). As far as Volkswagon reliability please refer to JD Power surveys, I think you will get a much broader view ov VW troubles in the past few years. Good Luck.

A secondary air pump is generally known as "a secondary air pump" or the slang version "air pump # 2"!
