Bank One Complaint - Scam to make revenues from Bill Pay - Bill Pay

Complaint
Review by doctortom on 2004-09-08
SIERRA VISTA, ARIZONA -- Bank One is running a scam through their Bill Pay program. It cost me $174.00 in overdrawn fees. I have documentation to prove it but will try to explain it. This online so it has Nationwide implications.

When you set up a Payee for automatic Bill Payment, you put in their name, address, phone number, and your account number on the first page. You then click on a button on the bottom it goes to a second page which is already filled out except for the amount of money you want to pay. You put that in and click on another button and it is all setup.

I have been using Bill Pay for quite awhile and haven’t had any problems until this month. The second page evidently sets the send date and estimated receive date automatically. So while you are looking only at putting in the amount to pay the date they will send it is already set. When I put in the amount I am assuming that it will be paid when I have my direct deposit arrive and have money to cover the automatic bill payments. What happened is that Bank One paid my bills on August 30st and, since my direct deposit would not be posted until the next day, I was charged an overdrawn fee which totaled $174.00. I have copies of all of this.

On July 30th, this was not done. I have talked to the manager of the Fry’s Bank One, their 800 number people, and the people who run the online services. No one will budge on this and this can be an arbitrary occurrence because of the way this is setup. This has to be happening nationwide wherever there is a Bank One.

I have been using Bankone bill pay for some time and am very happy with their service. If you read the terms of the service they fully explain that the money is taken out of your account the day you submit payment, not the day the payment is due to be received by the payee, many times they actually mail a check to your payee so it makes sense that they remove the funds at time of payment.

OK, so just to make sure I have this straight--are you NOT allowed to change the date of payment? If so that would be wrong, but if there is a way for you to alter to day of payment I can't see how you can blame the bank.
