Geek Squad Complaint - The Geek Squad Is Both Incompetent and Rude
GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA -- I want to extend a big NO THANK YOU to the Geek Squad for the total ineptitude in recovering "lost" photos from my memory card. Recently while on vacation my wife and I found that our memory card was full. As we always had done, we hooked up the phone and downloaded the photos. My wife then deleted the card, unfortunately, before she checked to see if the photos had downloaded correctly. Turns out the didn't download and were at this point lost. No big deal I said, we'll go to Best Buy when we get home and they can pull them off the card. After getting home my wife went to Best Buy and spoke to the Geek Squad. They told her that they would have to send the card to a Data Recovery Service because the card was corrupted and to recover the lost photos, IF POSSIBLE, it would be a minimum of $59.99 and between $250-$1000 depending on how much data was extracted! They were both rude and as it turns out, incompetent. My distraught wife posted her dilemma on Facebook and a friend of hers pointed her to a SONY HOSTED WEBSITE specializing in memory card data recovery. All you had to do was enter your memory card model and serial #, both of which are LOCATED ON THE CARD! Then you download the software, put your card into the computer and boom, ONE HOUR later all photos were recovered. FOR FREE. Seeing as the Geek Squad is a Best Buy service, and Best Buy SELLS SONY PRODUCTS, such as the camera and card I bought there, it is rather surprising that they don't know anything about recovering data from Sony products. Kudos to Sony by the way. There proprietary system of Sony cards, batteries and cards may seem tedious at times, but show me another company who will post free recovery software for their customers. This was a great customer service experience for Sony itself, TERRIBLE for Geek Squad. By the way - they told my wife she needed a new memory card at a cost of $50, which it turns out may not be so true either. Lying, cheating and thieving - way to go Geek Squad.
