Overstock.com Complaint - False advertising - Shipping charges

Shipping charges - Complaint
Review by kvetch on 2010-01-17
Am I the only one that is bothered by Overstock's home page which states $1 shipping on all orders then charges the regular rate, $2.95, for media items?

When customer service was contacted they claimed if you go to the left hand corner of their home page, at the bottom, and click on a special provision area, you will see the disclaimer.

There is no indication in the area of their posting $1 shipping that indicates that. Who looks at the bottom left hand corner unless directed to?

I see what you mean. Still $2.95 not bad for never leaving your house!

I read the entire page if I am ordering something. You pretend to buy a book so you can come in here and complain about a shipping fee you were not charged. I think I have found a term not much used since the 19th century, muckraker.

I saw the $1.00 shipping thing on TV.

either way shipping that's less than 3 bucks is pretty nice

and the website states the fine print for the one-dollar shipping

Sorry, Alley, I was referring to the question posted by the OP, "who reads the entire page?" I hope your pain goes away soon. The OP stated that he/she 'pretended' to purchase a book.

star - good point. it seems like another case of "i didn't read the sign therefore i shouldn't be held accounted for it"

which doesn't work actually

Starlord-I could not find anywhere that the OP stated that he/she pretended to order a book. The only place I see that is in AlleyS's comment. It would be wise to check the original post before name calling.

I think it is kind of misleading.

I agree with the OP on this. It clearly states on the top of Overstock's homepage, "$1.00 Shipping on Your Entire Order *Excludes AK, HI and International". That's it. No other exclusions or disclaimers.

Customer Service is correct in saying that there is a disclaimer on the bottom left hand corner of the page, but based on the wording of the bold print at the top of the page, I'm not sure I would look any further for exclusions. I imagine a lot of people are finding this out the hard way. It really needs to be clearer.

The homepage also says:

Plus new customers enjoy Free Shipping on your first order.*
*Continental U.S. Orders Only

Hi ya Alley,

I wasn't implying that the op was a new customer, I was just posting what else was on the site, regarding shipping.

I guess what I posted has no relavance, to the complaint, lol.

It is like anything else that showcases a special. You have to read the entire page for the restrictions.

however it only took me what... 5 seconds to find the link to the entire list of disclaimers?

i even provided the link above in my earlier post.

and that's a site i haven't been to in a long time. i ordered something from them back in... 2005 or so and haven't really been back much since.
