Plant shut down - Complaint
Review by Becky 345 on 2010-01-17
They shut down their plant in Samoa and put many people out of work. I will NOT BE BUYING THEIR PRODUCT AGAIN! Did they move to ChinA? Probably!!!

Very wise becky345. So you will not be buying GM cars. Ford cars, GE products, or about 1000 other companies that have closed or laid off workers in the last year.. What you really mean is that a company should just lose money to keep people employed, think it out, it may take a while but you can do it.

Though the details weren't brought up in the 60 Minutes show the OP very likely saw tonight, Chicken of the Sea closed its Samoa plant to open one in the state of Georgia. Brought 200 jobs along with a $20 million investment to Georgia. Labor costs, of all things, were the driving factor in their decision to do so. (Labor costs forced on them by the U.S. this past year, according to 60 Minutes.) The other tuna canneries in Samoa may also follow suit. Chicken of the Sea sent none of these jobs to China.

Samoans were working for well under minimum wage. When the law passed requiring them to be paid minimum wage, Chicken of the Sea packed up and moved. I guess they figured if they had to pay livable wages, they may as well do it on the mainland? I don't know...

perhaps

then again, it's kinda sad... in order to give us cheap prices many companies have to move out of the US in order to make the product. otherwise, the extra costs - such as health insurance, retirement, etc... would be added to the cost of the product.

I know of one company that is 100% made in the US - they even buy their supplies from 100% US companies. The product is well made and they stand behind the name.

However their products are NOT cheap.

that's the drawback

and for things like food items... there's a lot of people who would scream bloody murder if they had to pay extra for items

I saw about a program that looked into the number of NFL players from Samoa, 30 in the NFL. Look at pro sports salaries and see how much we contribute to the Samoan econmy.

I know someone that works at the plant here in Lyons Ga. It brought alot of jobs here and I for one are glad that they came. I wish they would've left their management there though.
