Ole Carolina Brand / TSD Sales Complaint - Hickory Or Not - Bacon

Review by headly on 2010-01-27
My wife and I have been buying OLE CAROLINA BRAND "Hickory Smoked" sliced bacon 16oz. package from ALDI for about 1 1/2 years now. The problem we have had several times with the product that we purchase is that it's labeled as"Hickory Smoked".When we go to frying the bacon is the house starts smelling heavily of "Maple",the smell stays in the house for several days which makes my wife and I nauseous. We either give what is left of the package away, or throw it out. If we wanted "MAPLE" ,we would buy "MAPLE".I know the package states that it has maple syrup as one of the ingredients, but some one is not doing their job as far as quality control on the amount of maple syrup is going into this product. Maybe the company is actually putting"Maple" instead of "Hickory" bacon in the packages and just "Does Not Care" what they are putting out as long as they can get away with it!!

Wow really? Your biggest complaint is Bacon? Number one, youre shopping at ALDI. I like ALDI for their low prices, but ALDI is a low-profit bottom-of-the-line grocery store. I wouldn't expect high quality foods and packaging. As far as the maple smell, whenever I fry bacon, the smell is normally in the house for quite a while. That goes with ANY bacon. I would prefer to smell the maple smell than the smell of cooked bacon.

There's nothing like the smell of maple and hickory coming from bacon in the morning.
Have any windows or a stove vent?
Too bad about the wife but if I had to choose..............

ZZ, you would choose bacon over a woman?

perhaps you might want to consider plain bacon
and then get a small bottle of liquid hickory flavor?

yaya - "bacon over a woman" sounds like a bacon bra...
tho i'm sure zz won't mind that idea? =)

I'd suggest buying other brands of bacon that say they are "hickory smoked," cook them and see if you get the same results. That way, you will know for sure, that it's the brand that's failing and not all bacon.

Peps, I am not touching that one.
Yaya, if my woman can't take the maple, she can't eat at my table!

hmm well there is the factor that the bacon bra i saw pictures of was uncooked bacon
it would probably be healthier cooked - though perhaps NOT served sizzling hot cos... that's kinda mean.

I am a first time user of the product "Ole Carolina Hickory. Smoke Bacon" I was very disappointed in this product, I was only able to get six slices of Bacon from the package, rest was shaving of fat matted together, l will NOT be buying this product again.

I am very glad to find I am not crazy. I haven't smelled hickory smoke for a while but I thought "Dang, that smells strongly of maple!". We bought the stuff for BLTs so we're bummed.

The maple flavoring was so strong I could not use the bacon in my recipe after cooking it. Who wants maple flavored corn chowder? Not my family. Will not buy it again until I see that maple flavoring is no longer an ingredient on the package. The house reeked of maple syrup for a week.
