Garmin Complaint - Garmin Update Does Not Update - Garmin Nuvi

Garmin Nuvi - Complaint
Review by Barrington on 2010-01-27
LENEXA, KANSAS -- I purchased a map "update" for my Garmin Nuvi. Cost was >$60. Recent interstate changes, however, were not included. I phoned Garmin and was advised that map changesd are normally two-three years behind. That lag makes the term "update" a total nonsense. It is nothing of the kind. I wrote the Garmin CEO, noting that this was, at a minimum, unethical. No response. The money, in my view, was a total waste and my interest in further Garmin purchases has evaporated.

My garmin nuvi updated just fine.

Update is a compressed term for up to date. Maps that are three years old and thus show no changes for that period are certainly not that.

I was thinking about updating my GPS, but didnt realize this. Eh, probably not worth the 60 bucks for a few extra added streets I will probably never encounter.

I'd have to take issue with your semantics: update does not necessarily mean up TO date.... if the maps were 3 years old prior, and 2 years old after, they have 'upped' the date, i.e. made it more current than it was.

I think you are being a little unfair in your assessment of them. They have to rely on the information that is provided to them. When a major highway project is undertaken, you can be assured that the lines have long since been painted on the roads before anyone sends updated information to the companies that produce and resell these maps, and probably even longer if you are looking at local streets and roads.

When in doubt refer to the dictionary.

up⋅date

–verb (used with object)

1. to bring (a book, figures, or the like) up to date, as by adding new information or making corrections: to update a science textbook.

Hmmmm... The dictionary tends to agree with Barrington but eh I'm sure the dictionary is wrong.

I have to agree with Ken. There must be some reasonable time allowed to be able to identify new or changed routes and create an update to include them. I have to be honest, our car is a 2007 and hence the guidance system's CD is that old too. I would never imagine I would run across discrepancies in the rout guidance system enough to warrant doing any updating at this time.

Slim, What would you consider to be a reasonable time?
Posted by Slimjim on 2010-01-28:
Two years. I mean, I'm not nthebiz so I can't say what is possible with average effort or something more, but Garmin is. I have to believe that they update their maps as fast as reasonably possible. After all, GPS' are their anchor product, aren't they?

I am not trying to out-obnoxious Stew, but if you're going to cut and paste definitions, ought you not post the whole thing? Stew leaves out the part: "Computers. to incorporate new or more accurate information in (a database, program, procedure, etc.)." I think we are dealing with computers here, and they did add new or more accurate information.
