Avis Complaint - Renting cars without winter tires and overcharges on car return
FRANKFURT AM MAIN, GERMANY -- I rented a small car from Avis at Frankfurt, Germany Airport, beginning of January 2010. I booked the car on Expedia, a partner of Avis, and picked up the car at the airport pick up station. While booking the car, I was not informed that the car comes with summer tyres nor did I have a chance on the internet to upgrade to winter tyres. When I picked up the car it was winter and snow outside - so I would assume Avis rents its cars with winter tyres or at least point out the fact that you need to rent winter tyres separately while booking. They did not. At the airport they charged me almost 1/4 of the original total price on top just to get winter tyres.
Secondly, when I returned the car 12 hrs early, they charged me another about 300 EUR extra for the early return of the car.
I complained and they found out it was a Avis computer problem. So they manually fixed the problem which took them another 30min at the return. I had to go back to the airport where I picked up the car so that I lost an extra 45min. There was no friendly service or sincere apology that this happened to me. When I complained and asked for a supervisor they told me that I can call a customer service hotline!
Anyway, bad experience and I recommend to make sure people watch out whether winter tyres are inclusive in a rental car offer in Germany and when you return a car early make sure you don't get overcharged.
