Budget Van Lines Complaint - Very bad customer service - Cross country move

Cross country move - Complaint
Review by cross country move victim on 2010-02-03
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- This company represented they and their employees would move us with no problems, this quite simply was a lie. They stated just their employees would move us. A moving company who was subcontracted showed up and made it very clear they were not in any way shape or form owned and operated by Budjet. This company was Alpha Van Lines out of New York also, and was very bad, (another review on their site.) This company agreed to the move after the Budjet representative advised us on two other occasions other companies were available for the move. Budjet advised other companies couldn't meet the very important closing date of our house sale. Alpha showed up the day before closing and advised they would not be able to move us out in one day, it took several beyond the closing date as they arrived with only two guys, and not several as Budjet stated would happen, and they were not Budjet employees. The Budjet representative and I spent several hours on the phone measuring (me) and advising sizes weights etc of all our household items. This was to "save money (500.00)" other companies would charge to send someone out to estimate. This was a very poor decision on my part, but seemed to make sense at the time. the weight according to Alpha was off by over 2 tons! Alpha did not re-weigh the load as stated they would, but still hold you up for the over amount before they will release your property. Anyway, This moved cost several thousand dollars more than estimated by Budjet say nothing about lost, stolen, damaged goods and house cleaning costs. All of which Budjet will accept no responsibility, say nothing about not even responding to my or BBB inquiries.

The Budjet representative also stated he definitely would be available the day of our move if there were any problems (even pretended to check his schedule), but was not as problems did arise obviously. He was not available at any time that day or since the move, and refuses to answer calls or emails. Another representative stated she was the boss and would deal with Alpha for me stating she "had them by the balls" due to the business climate, but she never did anything or return calls.

This seems to be a requirement of Budjet of their employees. All in all I would not recommend Budjet for anything to anyone.

I had a call from Budjet's council to settle. Tried to get me to settle for 150.00 (What they make ??) Obviously I declined and gave a figure I would settle for. This was my "low ball" offer and thousands less than what is appropriate, but I figure better than nothing. Nothing is what I've heard and received after yet another statement by a Budget representative to get back to me by the end of the week, 3 weeks ago!

When we moved across country, we used Allied, and they were the ones who showed up, no sub-contracting.

Are they only offering $150.00 due to not taking out insurance? Good luck, and please let us know what happens.

Totally a scam. I wonder what the law will ever do about this?

I have heard horror story after horror story, and many on shows like Dateline NBC, in regards to moving companies and their strongarm tactics. It's a shame they are allowed to work like that. But in the end, it is the consumer that allows it to happen. Don't use them. It may be a hassle, but move yourself. I've moved from the East coast to the West coast on a couple of occasions, and I always had peace of mind knowing that I was packing, handling, and unpacking my own personal possessions.

As requested here is an update. The attorney for Budjet again contacted me and advised they would do no more than the original 150.00, stating the owner(s) refused to give any more, also with a letter quoting statutes as to why they do not have to. I was also told they are CONTINUING to utilize Alpha Van Lines even with the admitted knowledge of the companies' bad service. I guess greed makes companies like this do what they do. Just beware.
Also I would have moved myself and looked into it, but the trucks available were not big enough according to Budjet and I'm disabled and unable to lift, etc as required for a move.

I went to the Attorney generals office in my state and they have danced around doing anything. They sent letters etc, but the company is unresponsive (Alpha Van Lines) and apparently there is nothing the AG's office can or willing to do. I have to write the whole thing up AGAIN, and send it to a third party negotiator, per the AG's office. I can't belive ther is no law violation with refusing to re-weigh, no bill of lading, etc. The saga continues-----
