Goodyear Complaint - Goodyear Viva 2 Tires for Toyota Sienna are dangerous!!! - Tires

Complaint
Review by lalapo on 2010-02-04
PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY -- Hi, I had two new year tires from Walmart of Goodyear Viva 2 brand. I also purchased the road hazard policy from Walmart for accidental damage coverage of Tires.
I drove few hundred miles on the tires this month of January 2010. One of the tires blew out due to nail in sidewall of tire and steel lining showing out of treads on the tire. I went back to Walmart and they refused to replace the tire. They had a ridiculous statement of uneven wear on tire, so they cannot replace the tire even though I had the road insurance policy with Walmart.

This was third tire on Goodyear Viva 2 in last two years. The Walmart manager and his two associates ([snip - no names - please be respectful]) started arguing with me back and forth on this tire. The tire was of extreme poor quality.

You had a nail in the tire? Which Walmart associate do you think put it there?

LS, hopefully it was the 'some queer guy'. I think he is entitled.

LadyScot, You crack me up. You do know what a "road hazard wrranty" is, correct? You do realize walmart sells "road hazard warranty", yes?

In case you are not aware I'll post the warranty :

"Road Hazard Warranty
The Road Hazard Warranty is just $9.76 per tire and covers:

* Unforeseen road hazards
* Flat repairs
* Free replacement of non-repairable tires within the first 25% of tread wear "

You see it really doesn't matter how the nail got into the tire it is supposed to be covered.

I just watched an interesting video on the age of "new" tires being sold. It was done by a investigative news group. Apparently there is a number on the inside wall of tires that say when they were manufactured. Tires that sit on the shelf for 6-7 years can rot internally before they are ever used. They did a random test and found tires 5-7 years old being sold at places all over, including Walmart.

You have to look at the number on the inside wall. If it says "171". That means it was made in the 17th week of 1991. If it says, "1501" that means it was made in the 15th week of 2001. Etc.

Have a look the next time you buy tires.

If the tire blew out that badly, what was left to show the uneven wear? Glad you did't get injured when it went.

Stew, that time I was actually trying to be funny. It was just the way the OP wrote the complaint....or maybe the way I read it.

I don't work TLE so I know nothing about the tire warranty.

Sparticus, goduke, stew and kenpopcorn- thank you all for posting good information and sharing my pain in response to my post.
LadyScot- thank you for making this forum live and interesting.

I have already lodged a complaint with Walmart Corporate Headquarters and so far they have been nice and helpful in looking into tire safety issue.

I humbly request all consumers of Goodyear Viva 2 tires to post their feedback on this forum/NHTSA regarding this product. After googling reviews/ratings on Goodyear Viva 2, in my opinion, Walmart should immediately recall these tires.

See, this is the reason I don't purchase extended or extra anythings on anything. It doesn't seem like anyone honors the extra warranties or guarentees. It's like taking a match to good hard earned money. I did purchase one on my Honda, though.

One piece of lacking info is how many miles these tires have on them. The op states he drove a few hundred miles this month-but how many miles were driven on them before that? The op also mentioned something about it being the 3rd tire in 2 years.
If the tires are wearing fast enough were the steel is showing on parts of the tread afer only a few hundred miles (assuming they are new tires) there is a severe issue with the vehicle, and the OP should notice a handling issue. I'd start with getting the alignment checked-they will also look at the toe in/out. Then go from there. To me, it sounds like a vehicle issue, not a tire issue. Even if the tires are a year or so old-get the alignment checked-and always rotate your tires per manufacturer specifications.

redmx3racer- I got three tires replaced,two in front and one in rear passenger and got them rotated. In front, the tires tread did not wear at all. The sidewalls of tires were weak. On two of three tire there were bubbles on sidewall after 5000 miles and Walmart reluctantly replaced the tires.
The tire I am currently talking about is fairly new tire with hardly any wear on treads of tire. The problem I suspect is Goodyear viva 2 tires sidewalls are poorly built. As I have posted before, the nail on the inner side of the tire collapsed the steel lining of sidewall of the Goodyear Viva 2. **This is not an alignment issue**.
My poster complies with postings from several other customers who have purchased the Walmart tires.
Btw, I have fourth BF Goodrich tire on my vehicle purchased from Costco 3 years back, which is working ok.
