Coleman Campers Complaint - Cracking Plastic on Coleman Campers

Review by bbro300zx on 2010-02-11
For years I had a great impression of Coleman products and perceived them as having high quality standards. We own a fairly expensive Coleman Camp Trailer which I expected to last for decades. It is the Fleetwood model which has a lot of room for a family. But I as so disappointed that at ten years of age all the plastic is cracking and basically falling to pieces. The entire top piece is a molded piece of plastic and it has begun cracking from oxidation. But what is worst is that the corner pieces are also made from plastic and they are all cracking too. I called the local dealer and they said that there is no warranty since we bought the unit from a friend who was the original owner. But even if we were the original owner, they said that Coleman charges over $ 1000.00 for shipping the top even under warranty.

I have tried to get a hold of Coleman and it doesn't seem like they are very interested in customer service or helping me to solve this issue. I will never buy anymore Coleman products after this experience. So beware if you are looking for camping trailers, stay away from Coleman.

How is the trailer stored? Does the trailer sit out uncovered in the sun and other weather elements? That could account for the cracking of the top and corner pieces--any plastic/rubber can degrade in the direct sun or if left out in the weather.

It's true, plastic seems indestructible to elements, but direct sun really weakens it fast. Not saying yours was or wasn't protected well throughout its life, but it does make a case for a good storage cover. Honestly, I can't see why Coleman whould be compelled to offer anything on a 10 year old camper bought second hand.
