At Home Corporation Complaint - DSL Cancelled and still charged and not refunded - DSL
Complaint
NEW YORK -- I had DSL service with AT&T for about a year. I moved, so I called to have the DSL transfered. AT&T told me that DSL wasn't available in the area I was moving to. I was disappointed because I liked the service. So, I cancelled the old phone line, I cancelled my DSL account, and I hooked up with Dial-Up via AT&T on my new phone in my new apartment. Yippie!
A month later I get a bill. They charged me for dial up useage AND a DSL monthly fee, AND DSL usage. OOPS, I thought. So I called to have this error corrected, but it was not to be.
AT&T told me that I used the DSL service while I was dialing up. What? Check on that would ya? My other phone line (old apartment) was indeed canceled and the DSL cancelled, but AT&T was showing that I used DSL on my new phone line.
"How can that be?" I argued, "when AT&T told me that DSL is not available in my area? Had it been available, I would have transfered the account, I like AT&T DSL"
So the rep checked . . . "DSL is not available in your area" she told me "BUT, you have DSL usage and you have to pay for it"
Does this make sense? NO! Its' a bunch of . . . a lot of . . . well, excuse me but, you know what! It's like telling me there are no phone lines available in the area but you used the phone to make a call and you have to pay for it.
How could I have used DSL when DSL is not available in my area? Impossible? I thought so too. But not AT&T, they still charged me for DSL usage, and refused to credit my account.
They took money from my credit card and refuse to give it back.
So I filed a complaint with my credit card company. I filed a complaint with the BBB and I filed a complaint here. . . oh, and I have since switched to cable.
Edit 9/30: Much to my surprize! Today, exactly 2 Days after sending this notice to you all through my 3 cents, AT&T has CREDITED my account! Haleluja! There is a heart in corporate America! Kudo's to AT&T!

I urge everyone to stay away from this garbage corporation. For every positive story there are hundreds of negative experiences. AT & T is awful and erroneously bills and service charges regularly.
