Kaiser Compliment - Great coverage with a small, local network
Kaiser is a really great choice for someone who wants rich benefits and the option for full maternity for an individual GA product. This is my 5th year as a member, and I am very happy. My doctors are very thorough--I had blood in my urine and severe pain, and immediately went through multiple tests and a CT scan within 24 hours to rule out any factors. I know that a wait for a CT scan can take weeks for other carriers, and I was impressed that I was treated immediately. My first thought was that it was cancer, but turned out to be kidney stones, but my follow-up care was still very upfront, and I even got a quote from the business office to inform me of the cost of my procedure before I got it, so I could plan accordingly, and Kaiser even gave me a 20% reduction in proce for paying it in full. My dad, a previous Kaiser member, went through every test imaginable when they thought he had a rare type of cancer (luckily he didn't)and they never held back treatment (I hear complaints about this with CA's Kaiser, or at least in its history), and he has nothing but praises for his doctors and those helping him through the process.
The only issues I have experienced is the small network and need for referrals, but it is an HMO, and I knew about this when signing up--check your doctors and hospitals first so you know what you are looking at network-wise. I once had to wait several weeks for a podiatry appointment, but I have had similar waits with other carriers to be fair, but was limited with Kaiser for my in-network options.
The premiums are higher than some other companies, but I need the maternity, so I can deal with it, but I understand that for people not looking for this benefit, there may be lower cost options with larger networks out there.
