Macy's East Complaint - Illogical, Rude Service for Long-Time Customer - Charter Club pajamas

Charter Club pajamas - Complaint
Review by macotsha on 2010-03-01
BRIDGEWATER, NEW JERSEY -- I attempted to return a pair of pajamas that I'd loved but which had shrunk considerably after I'd washed them. In the bag, in addition to the PJ's, were a couple of receipts for Charter Club PJ's: one dated September 15, 2009 and the other (which unbeknownst to me had fallen out in my car)dated December 10, 2009. The clerk initially told me that they did not have tags on them; I explained that they wouldn't since I'd washed them after wearing them. She then told me that they didn't take back anything after 6 months; I told her that I wasn't sure when I'd purchased them, that it could have been December or November but even if it had been in September, it wasn't yet 6 months. I suggested that she look it up on my Macy's account; I intended to make a large purchase anyway. She would not do so. I asked to speak to a White Flower Manager (I'd worked for Bamberger's/Macy's over 30 years previously and have had an account there ever since). Eventually one showed up (meanwhile I am sitting there in my wheelchair while a large, gawking line forms; the clerk took care of those customers). The manager told me the same things that the clerk had; moreover, she informed me that she would have left the tags on if she'd planned to return the items!!(I don't know if she shops at Macy's, but they should be forewarned!!) She continued to berate me with this though I pointed out repeatedly that I had wanted the PJ's, that I had NOT planned to return them and that I had not expected them to shrink. Eventually she finally rang up my credit and, probably, my last Macy's purchase!

Golly, I can't believe a complaint on Macy's East. Usually it's only those glowing happy, happy customers. How refreshing this is for a change. I do agree with Alley though. Had I been on duty I wouldn't have taken them back either simply because of the time period involved. Perhaps you had only worn them a couple of times and then decided to wash or perhaps you had washed them numerous times since purchase. They had no way of knowing.

I do think it's absolutely ridiculous someone would question why the tag was not still attached when you had told them the PJ's had been washed. I personally remove all tags before wearing a garment and certainly before washing. Every person I know does the same. At least you did finally receive credit.

If the OP took good care of the item(s) and on the first time washing them (as long as all washing instructions were followed)and the item(s) shrank, then they should have been returned as a "manufacturers defect", I believe.

I wouldn't want item(s) that shrank the first time I washed them. They would be useless.

Thoughts?

Mrs.V, I do agree. BUT, i also believe there should be a reasonable amount of time after which the store can deny to return anything for any reason. You wouldnt believe how long some people will hold onto items for.

I agree with you Mrs. V. But there are people who would lie in order to get a store to take something back. Once at my store a man claimed he bought a shirt he wanted to return 'just last week'. My store hadn't sold those particular shirts for about 10 years.

LOL, Pepper. No kidding.

very good point fufu
and without the tags there's no real proof when the items were purchased

there are people who try to return stuff that's been used for over a year simply because they want (or need) the cash.

if an item shrinks with the first wash, it's best to bring it back right away with the tags, instead of waiting a few months. that way you at least have some proof. heck that's another reason to keep the receipts too

I actually like it when clothes shrink when I wash them. Most of the time, the clothing I buy is too long
Posted by Mrs. V on 2010-03-01:
True. I guess this is down to how long the OP actually had the item(s).

She states that she bought them in Sept or Dec and Macy's has a 6 month return policy.

If the OP has had the item(s) for 3 to 6 months, the OP must have washed the item(s) more than once.

So it would not be a defect in the clothes but in something the OP did, I would think.

Hey, I'm a guy, so what do I know about these things? Having said that, hasn't the clothes shrinkage thing been an issue for years? Don't you look at the material and assume a certain amount of shrinkage? And isn't the pre-wash thing popular for garments that tend to shrink a lot, like 100% cotton? So my question is, did these pajamas shrink more than expected? If not, why would you deserve to return them?

I once had a shirt that was made like a patchwork quilt. All the pieces were different shapes and and sizes and made of different fabrics. When I washed it, some of the pieces shrunk and some didn't. It was interesting, to say the least.

I took it back to Bambergers (now Macys), with no receipt or tags and they gladly took it back. But that was a long, long time ago.

I can relate to this ladies problem I too purchased a pair of PJ's from Macy's they were "Nautica"brand and they shrunk a full size when I washed them.I didn't bother taking them back but I will not buy any more there.

It may sound odd, returning a pair of PJs after washing and wearing them. But I just bought, wore, and washed a pair of Charter Club PJs that I LOVED, and they shrunk so badly with one wash that they will never fit me. The sleeves now don't even come within an inch of my wrists! What a waste of money! Like macotsha, I too want some sort of compensation for this. I am not wealthy enough to pay $23 for a pair of pajamas to only wear once and throw away!

Also, in response to LadyScot: I followed the care-tag instructions to a T, it shrunk (notably) despite that. I feel as though I have been very ripped-off.

If anyone still has doubts about the legitimacy of the compliant, just go chekc out the reviews on Charter Club pajamas. I just saw one that had 7 review, EVERY customer rated them with 1 star and complained of significant fabric size reduction after washing the garments.
