Whirlpoot Top-Mount Refrigerator - Whirlpool engineering defects
I purchased a Whirlpool Refrigerator (ER2CHMXPL00) on 5/17/04. The ice-maker broke within a few months and we elected not to bother to get it fixed. On March 4, 2009 we required a service call because there was water getting into the refrigerator portion. It was explained to us by the service technician that the water drain becomes clogged and has to be cleaned out. He used a common hair-drier to get rid of an ice dam and then ran a piece of wire through the drain to clear it. I was charged $203.00 for the labor to fix this clog. The service ticket reads "clean defrost drain."
Now (March, 2010) it's happened again. We've called Whirlpool and they simply state that it's out of warranty. It may be out of warranty, but the poor engineering that started the problem remains. They were only willing to give us a discount on a new Whirlpool refrigerator. (Like there's any chance I'd ever buy another Whirlpool anything.)
Poor design followed by poor service followed by cavalier treatment of customers equals this note and a story to tell everyone I come in contact with. Simple message: Don't buy anything from Whirlpool.
