Sanyo Manufacturing Corp Complaint - Microwave

Complaint
Review by burnedoutnow on 2010-03-25
I bought a sanyo microwave in November of 2009 at Best Buy. It recently starting shorting out and sparking when it cooked food. I called sanyo and complained that it was a fire hazard. They had UPS pick it ground. Their customer relations dept is unprofessional. I called to see the status of my microwave which took them 10 days to look at, the Head of customer relations stated the techs put a cup of water in the microwave and it didn't catch on fire and spark. ?????? I said a cup of water? He said his techs have over twenty plus years and they found nothing wrong with it. But because there was finger prints on the outside of the microwave of the stainless product they are calling lack of proper maintenance. He yes.. and the microwave wasn't that clean to be less than three months old. His techs deemed that isn't cost effect to repair it because it looked older than three months. I asked did they check for the shortage he stated no because of lack of maintence. They won't repair or replace it. I would never ever buy another Sanyo product again. They don't stand behind there product and their technitans won't do their job by accessing the real problem.

when it sparks, what type of dishware are you using?

Or foods. I can't remember how it got in there but I remember a jalapeno stem sparking up in a microwave.
The OP is probably using uncoated dishware with metal trimming.

Hopefully you didn't put anything metallic in the microwave. That alone would cause sparking. Also, if foods are overcooked or burned sparking may occur, especially with popcorn.

What the heck kind of maintenance can you possibly do on a mickey-wave except to wipe it down with a damp cloth.... it isn't like it needs a 3000 mile or 30 day oil change!
I call BS on this review!

Possibly using dishes that are not microwave approved?

The first time we used one we forgot about the gold trim on the edge of the dish... what a light show!

GN, I had a microwave salesman tell me that popcorn was the biggest reason microwaves burn out faster than usual.

I do know you have to keep the microwaves clean in order for them to cook efficiently, but as far as keeping them running, I don't know about that. The one we had at work was a mess from people heating up stuff without covers. I refused to ever use it. But, it was still chugging away for quite some time and never broke that I knew of.

Whatever the reason, a microwave shouldn't be sparking and having a meltdown after such a short time, unless you are using metallics, as others mentioned. That would probably do it in in short order. If not, then you had a "lemon" and they should have replaced it.

Another reason why I hate microwave popcorn, and dryer sheets for that matter. Both end up ruining the item they are supposed to be used in.

I used plastic microwavable containers. So that wasnt the issue. The food was in the microwave less than a minute before it sparked. Yes if you read the review.. To test the microwave for problems the Tech put a cup of water in the microwave. When does water spark?

So the food was sparking?
There must be a hole in the shield in front of the heating element or it is not properly installed.

My microwave was clean inside before I had to box it up and ship it to Sanyo. Then it had my fingerprints all over it. I clean my microwave after every use. I ask the customer relations manager what is lack of maintaince if the microwave is clean on inside. He thats just what his techs told him. Their assestment of the problem was by putting a cup of water in the microwave and looking at the outside no other testing was done. Sanyo had a microwave recalled in japan for this very same issue. No metal ... I repeat no metal was used at all.

That's awful. I've tried to melt chocolate chips (twice), and that caused sparking in my microwave.

I don't think fingerprints on the stainless steel interior would be an issue. I am still using a 25-year-old Amana Radarange with a stainless steel interior (as well as years of fingerprints, splashes, and spills), and it's still working well.
