Goodwill stores Informative - Local community getting ripped off

Review by fmerg on 2010-04-02
KINGSTON, NEW YORK -- Our local goodwill store offers no services in our community
instead they send all the money raised to nyc over 120 miles away
after checking I found that most store support larger citys and not the local community that they are located in
in some cases they hurt the local community by being tax exempt
the property comes off the tax rolls and your donation leave your community
the thrift store/food pantry I volunteer at use to receive donations from
our local target store but goodwill now receives all donations from target stores I think this is nation wide
please write telling them to stop this practice and support the local community's they are located in

A lot of our local folks find some pretty decent bargains at Goodwill stores. They're happy to have them in the community.

I only donate to local charities in our city. That way I know I'm directly benefiting people that live locally. For instance, the animal shelter and women's shelter have a store. There is also another place that doesn't even sell the goods, but instead donates them to needy recipients who are trying to set up a household or need clothing. There are a lot of choices out there. Possibly you have some in your own community.
