Saab of Downers Grove Compliment - Saab of Downers Grove - Positive Experience

Review by Bill from Chicago on 2010-04-03
DOWNERS GROVE, ILLINOIS -- I read a couple of pretty heavy complaints about the ethical practices at Saab of Downers Grove. This was afer my purchase. I wasn't too concerned b/c I a) expect car dealerships to be a big shady and b) had an overall positive experience.

I bought a 2007 BMW 328XI in April of 2010 from Saab of DG. Like I said, I expect a little of the following when I go to a car dealer: cheezeball salesmen, syrupy friendliness, excuses and slanted explanation of pricing, etc, car sale "tricks", etc. While I definitely saw a tinge of all of that at Saab, DG, overall my experience was positive.

Part of the reason I feel I got a good deal: 1) I went on a slow, weekday morning when very few other customers were there. That's the best time to do business with them. 2) I did my homework and had A LOT of documentation to negotiate price, extra fees, etc. They seemed to realize this.

I was helped by Jose Perez, the Salesman and Mike S. the Sales Manager. I had no real issue with either. On the price of the car, I asked what they could do. He asked me what I wanted to pay (typical: "he who speaks first" and all...) so I just showed them a similar model BMW I had printed at a lower price. He said "That's a year older than this one" to which I told him that it also had 8k fewer miles, which was more important. With almost no haggling at all, they met that price which was about $1,600 less than the list price.

The only time they got a little cute was with the extra fees at the end. Their price for transferring or issuing new plates was quite high. I told them I just wanted them transferred, not new and this brought it down $80. Still a bit high, but both sides need to give.

On my trade-in, I honestly thought their offer was fair. It was less than Nada and Edmunds but more than KBB so I met them in the middle.

Financing is through a third party (GMAC) so they really didn't get too cute there and I got a good rate and payment.

So again, I think the time and day along with my research helped, but I would say I got a very fair deal from Saab of DG. Jose called me the next day to make sure everything was okay with the car.

So my advice is, expect a degree of the car dealership sleaze ANYWHERE you go. Saab was a reasonably pleasant experience.
