Calvin Klein, Inc. Complaint - Calvin Klein Advertisement has taken it too far - Advertisement

Complaint
Review by espland on 2010-04-21
NEW YORK, NY -- Picture this. Your daughter has reached the age in which she is listening more to music and likes her own artists. Who wouldn't want their daughter to like Taylor Swift. She sees Taylor Swift on the cover of Rolling Stone and very much wants the magazine. So you let her get that issue. Before you even start the car you hear from the back seat "Mom, look at this!" You turn to see the advertisement on the second page of Rolling Stone. Pornography! With the crease in the magazine the girl's shorts are hard to see so she looks totally nude, as she lay on two men, one tongue kissing her, the other man she is laying on has his hand going down her shorts while her naked chest is in front of his face. There is a third man laying next to them all holding the top of his jeans open. This is what, 3 guys 1 girl sex to sell jeans? I guess Calvin Klein wanted to see how far they can take it and I guess they can take it pretty far.
I am a very open minded woman and love the artistic way Calvin Klein ads show beauty and wonderful photography. Some of it is a bit racy and that is fine. However this to me has crossed the line. I will never buy from this company again and will encourage others to boycott them as well. What else can I do. When two women in my salon saw this one teared up and the other was enraged. It is not only me that views this as unacceptable.
Calvin Klein you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Well, the idea was to get your attention. I guess it did. There is so much nastiness going on out there anymore I don't know how anyone manages to raise decent, moral, sweet children. I don't condone censorship, but how about a little good taste, CK?

I raised a daughter and wouldn't buy her a RS magazine regardless of who was on the cover unless I thought she was old enough and mature enough to see and understand what was inside.

I haven't seen the ad, and I don't know if it was produced specifically for RS where it might be appropriate for its readers. Maybe your complaint should be directed to Taylor Swift for appearing on the cover of a magazine with controversial ads. Or maybe it is Rolling Stone's fault for putting Taylor Swift on the cover of a magazine that is not appropriate for all ages. I don't know. But I do know that the buck stops with the parents. They are the ones responsible for doing the best they can to avoid exposing their children to what they deem inappropriate.

I agree that some ads are in bad taste, and Calvin Klein is no stranger to negative feedback, but that hasn't stopped them from pushing the envelope in the past. This strategy is obviously working for them.

Good taste disappeared in the 60's...

Rolling Stone magazine has never been main stream, so I would expect them to have racier ads. My suggestion would be that next time you should screen the reading material before buying. There are probably plenty of "teen" magazines that would be more appropriate. They probably all have articles on Taylor Swift with no objectionable ads.
