Home Depot Informative - What out for deceit - carpeting
HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND -- Today I went to Home Depot. Up until today this was my favorite hardware store. I have been remodeling two bedrooms in my house. So we have been shopping for carpet. It took us three times of going on and looking around the carpet area before anyone was even willing to ask us if we were interested in buying carpet.
Finally when someone came up to us we let her know...yes we are interested in buying carpet we are pricing and comparing right now. We have our measurements and everything if you could give us an estimate that would be great. Well we had a carpet sample from the other two times we went in and no one helped us. So we showed it to her. We told her that when we were in here last it was 1.48 per sq ft and now it has gone up to 1.58 per sq ft. Not a big deal, she said yea we had some pricing changes about two weeks ago... ok so I can buy that since the sign were we got the carpet sample said that....
anyway, there we are sitting at this table so she is saying since the one room is 11 x13 you will need to go with the 12 ft x13 ft carpet...which I understand....then after that she starts typing away on her little calculator...saying you will need 97 for installation...and we need to include a pad for the carpet...of course we knew that ( She didn't tell us how much nor what type of padding she had just calculated) and then she started just calculating away and not telling us anything... then looks up at us and tells us it will be $950.00 I thought that was a little much because I went on their website looked at their padding and carpets and did my own calculating... I thought anywhere from alittle of 6 hundred to maybe $800. my mom and I just look at each other and told the woman we would come back if we chose to buy from them. Then right before we walked away my mom said...how much is that carpet we showed you... the woman responded 1.98 per sq ft not including anything else. I think the woman thought that we were stupid... She didn't even give us her card when we left. Goodness if I could remember her name I would even put it on this page!!!
then we went to Lowe's where someone helped us right away. Gave us an estimate wrote down on a piece of paper the break down of that estimate. Let us know every little detail of what were would be paying for. Not only that he showed us that padding we had to choose from and told us about the differences in those options. He took his time and everything he said was honest. We liked everything so well we set up to have a contractor come to the house retake the measurements, and is making sure that everything is good to go for the carpet to be installed. Which by the way, is deduced off of the installment fee later when we actually sign the contract. The guy at Lowe's said that someone would be contacting us in 24 to 48 hours. It took two hours for the contractor to call us and set of the appointment for him to come out tomorrow morning... completely different service compared to Home Depot who couldn't even explain why they would charge us $950 for carpet. I will not be returning to their store unless I absolutely have to.
