Interesting compliment. Glad you like the White Castle sliders you get at the store. Maybe someday there will be a White Castle in your neighborhood.

White Castle has alwaays been a Midwest and East-based chain...I think the farthest west they came was Kansas City. The chain is corporate owned as well...none of the 200 or so White Castle restaurants are franchised. The frozen White Castle hamburgers at the supermarkets are close to, but not exactly the same as having a "slider" freshly made at one of their restaurants. Still, the frozen burgers are a way for White Castle to be available on a nationwide basis.

IMHO, you're not missing much. I know a lot of people love them, but to me, those burgers are greasy and all bread.

I absolutely love White Castle. Gotta have some every time I go to Ohio. I don't know why OKC has never had one ya know considering the chain was founded about 150 miles to the north of us.

I would definitely like a white castle in my area.

Hey Tina Bobina, (love your NIC)

You and your boyfriend should take a road trip, just so you can try the burgers!

So is that what that movie is about, those two guys taking a road trip to White Castle. I didnt know what was the point of that movie but, that movie was hilarious.

MRM, you have to check out Harold and Kumar go to White Castle! It's hilarious.

I think that was the movie. The movie was hilarious indeed.

The policy of White Castle only operating east of teh Mississippio goes back to the very early days of the chain's existence, and is the result of a court case. A chain calling itself White Towers started in Kansas City, IIRC, and sued White Castle over the use of the design of the buildings. White Castle proved they hired the architect to design the building, based on the Chicago water tower. The architect sold a duplicate set of plans to the White Tower people. The upshot of the deal was a settlement that included White Tower paying White Castle so much a year for use of the building design, and that White Castle would operate East and WHite Tower west of the river. White Castle is, to this day, a closely held corporation, and all shares are held by members of the Ingram family, descendants of 'Uncle Billy' Ingram, one of the co-founders. As one of their advertising slogan says, "The flavor some people can't live without."

Interesting factoid, Starlord!

I sometimes think it's the idea of a chain we don't have in our area or something we recall enjoying as a child. I was never in a White Castle but am familiar with Krystal. They appear to be very similar. I copied a portion from the Krystal website:

Davenport visited White Castle restaurants taking notes of successful features before setting forth on his own venture. Davenport and Sherrill set up the first Krystal at the corner of Seventh and Cherry streets in Chattanooga. While the building still stands, the original Krystal restaurant is no longer in operation. The oldest Krystal still in operation is located on Cherokee Boulevard in Chattanooga's Northshore District.

My opinion is it's great for a change but reminds me of those old Clara commercials "Where's the Beef?" It's the size of the soft thick bun but very thin. I would prefer less bread and more beef, but that's just me.

In addition, after reading Starlord's comment, he worked at a White Castle so is aware of the history behind that chain.

Why would you want a White Castle to open when you have In-N-Out there? We have In-N-Out here in AZ, but I swear it tastes better in Cali. I think it's because the produce is better there

Lilyaya + 10. I really like In-N-Out.

The frozen ones suck.

You don't want a White Castle in your neighborhood. Somehow, wherever they happen to be is a disgusting area.

The sliders fresh from the actual restaurant are so much better than the frozen ones from the grocery store! The restaurants are around the Chicago area, and people will drive for many miles to stock up on sliders. Like you, I wish they'd expand White Castle. I'd buy stock in the company if they would use the money to expand near me.
