2006 Chevy Avalanche - Complaint
Review by Sonny45 on 2010-05-25
FLORIDA -- Bought 2006 Chevy Avalanche, late 2006. Have had it, for 4yrs. Tailgate latch is made of plastics. Broke, could not get into the rear storage area. Called Gmac, was tpld to take it to the dealer, to diagonise. Dealer charged for, looking at the latch. Got abill for Approx $550. to replace a broken tailgate latch. Gmac did pay for it says, it was wear and tear per the dealer. Felt like I was raped, by the dealer and GmAc.,. This part cost About $45. Dollars on Ebay. to remove the broken latch, about 30 minutes

Same thing happened to my 99 GMC Sierra...I just "rigged" it so it would work. Apparently they never improved the quality. You're right, that whole mechanisim was a piece of plastic junk.

GMC was the manufacturer of the vehicle, you took it to a GMC dealer. GMAC is a finance company, General Moteors Acceptance Corporation, and has nothing to do with fixing cars or trucks. They are two separate entities. Your complaint is agansit GMC, not GMAC.

Here's something you have to realize about car repairs

1 Always shop around if you can. It doesn't cost you anything (except maybe a cell bill) to call up and ask "how much will this cost me" before you bring your car in. You MAY be able to skip the diagnosis, but they can say no.*

2 Parts. You may find parts cheaper online, however when you go to the dealer or a repair store, they will usually use the factor-specs part, brand new. it is more expensive. Again you can ask how much the part costs first**

3 Labor. You're not just paying for a part, you're paying for labor. If the part is harder to remove - i.e. if it needs welding, or extra work, it WILL cost extra.

4 wear and tear - yes, warranties do not cover items under the wear-and-tear items. Your warranty often specifies which parts are not included.

* This happened to me w/ the old car. I had some broken pump, and right as i got to the dealer the "check engine" light turned off. So, I just asked them to replace the pump. Never had them hook it to the machine, so I saved myself a diagnosis charge

** My car just had repairs, O2 sensor went bad. Autozone had a generic for 69 and an official one for 100something, dealer had one for 177, and the repair shop i went to had it for 160 or so.

my brother in law was going to change it out for me, but he couldn't pull the old sensor out (needed a blow-torch). If he had done the work it would have cost only the parts.

and thinking of repairs... check out the local word of mouth.
seriously.

back when i was in little creek, there was a mom-and-pop car shop right across the the base. he charged a heck of a lot less than the dealer for repairs. had a lot of military customers too since you could practically drop the car off and then walk to work

but above all else...
call. call around. sometimes you get better deals.

with my car repairs, yes it did cost
but i know it cost less than what the dealer would have charged.
