Grain Dealers Mutual Insurance Company Complaint - Fair Weather Insurance Company - Buyer Beware...

Review by Wilson1 on 2010-05-25
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA -- On 5/13/2010 I received notice from Grain Dealers Mutual Insurance Company, HQ'd in Indiana, that they were cancelling my physical damage coverage on my 2 cars and stated the reason was for Claim Experience. Upon review with my local agent, they referenced 4 claims over a 3 year period with 1 claim in 2007 for a broken windshield replacement ($227.51), in 2008, 2 claims for hail damage ($2518.08) and this year property damage backing out of our driveway and hit my aunts vehicle ($1,162.99) for a total claim amount of $3908.58 since I joined Grain Dealers over 10 years ago, that's the background. If I could have avoided the rock hitting the windshield in 2007 and the hail damage in 2008 I would have. I had no idea that these incidents would factor into GDealers decision to ask me to leave the family. I've filed a complaint with the North Carolina Dept. of Insurance as I felt I was treated unfairly and the timing of the cancellation was right after I received a PJC from the State Of NC for Speeding (1st ticket since 1993). The state investigated my compliant and found that GDealers was within their rights to cancel Physical Damage coverage. Grain Dealers also weighed in reiterating the cancellation was due to claim frequency and stated that the PJC had nothing to do with the cancellation.

OK, some of you will read this and say, four claims in 3 years is too many, but my point is that 3 of the four were out of my control while the forth one was my fault (my first accident ever, driving since 1975) and it was under the so called $1800 insurance points barrier. This company took on average $1500 / year over the last 10 years (>$15000 total)from me to cover my cars that I feel like they took my money and when the times got a little tough, the choose to turn their back on me. This is not the type of insurance company anyone wants to take care of their material possessions. I've also had them cover my home for the last 10+ years. Today, I signed with another insurance company for both my home and autos and we're very surprised of the action GDealers took.

Buyer beware, ask you agent how insurance companies count claims related to glass breakage, hail damage and other comp claims, it will help you make a good decision when selecting a reputable company.

A good point on researching the insurance company before you sign with them. Glad you found a new company to deal with.
