Apartment Ratings Informative - ApartmentRatings.com - Something to check out if you're planning on moving

Review by PepperElf on 2010-05-25
EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA -- I was recently introduced to this website - http://www.apartmentratings.com/ - since my boyfriend is currently hunting for an apartment.

Since then I've been looking at the site, both at places where I've lived, places where my family has lived, and places that others were thinking of eventually moving into.

The information is free, the advertising is easy to ignore, and ... well I personally think I've found a lot of good information there.

For each apartment in a given area, there will be a score (0 - 100%) and how many reviews are posted. The latest 5 reviews are partially quoted, followed by 5 more review links, and then a "read all" link.

Now granted, I've heard it said that a couple of apartment complexes have tried to pad their own score by posting false positive reviews, the negative reviews still stay up.

And some of the reviews are very negative for specific apartments. As I said above, I checked out places that relatives have lived in before, and for one of those apartments, several reviewers commented that the complex has resident drug dealers.

I point this out because that's one of the reasons why my relatives moved out. And it also shows that the site lets people be honest about what's really wrong with a place.

Now granted not every review is bad, or even false bad. I did find one that had a score of 100%, though it only had about 4 reviews. However from what I know of the area, it is in fact a high quality area.

But aside from the little stories about each apartment... it's a pretty good tool to use if you're thinking of moving.

PLUS, if there are specific issues with a landlord or landlady you might be able to find out about them before making a big mistake.

=)

Good info Peps. I would love to move into my own apartment one day. Sadly, I am stuck living with my brother, his wife, and the kids for the time being

I agree Pepper! I've used this site before. Sometimes the opinions are a little skewed, but you can get a general feel and then you know what to look for if you are visiting a property that you are considering.

I have used this site for years and can honesty say that I was only very disappointed once.

The last place I moved from had a high rating but must have been transitioning because it was a NIGHTMARE (drugs, fights, parties, etc.) and now has a low rating to reflect the reality of it. The ratings stared going down while I was living there. I checked because I was curious if others were experiencing the same thing as I was. There are some obvious fake positives and some that are real. Not every apartment or every building is the same in any complex.

The place before that had bad ratings and I moved in anyway so I got what I deserved.

The place I am in now has excellent ratings and I am extremely happy.

Apartment dwellers, please post ratings. Try to keep it factual, not just how you felt. It is hard, I know, but it really helps. And flag the reviews that look suspicious (like plants from managers, etc.)
